Matter and Energy

What is matter?

Matter is made up of liquid, solid and gas.

Liquid: Atoms are compact but only when contained by an object.

Solid: Atoms are very compact.

Gas: Atoms roam freely.

Matter is anything that has mass and volume. Volume is the amount of space an object occupies and mass is the quantity of matter in an object.

How does matter and energy interact?

Matter and energy interact because energy is the capacity to move or change matter. For example, kinetic energy is energy that only moving objects contain. A truck rolling down a hill has kinetic energy because the force of gravity pulls the truck down the hill.

How is matter classified?

Matter can be classified in numerous ways. One way is pure substance, which means matter can have only one type of atom. Another way is mixture where matter contains two pure substances that physically mix together. There are two types of mixtures, Homogeneous and heterogeneous. Homogeneous mixtures contain substances that are uniformly distributed. Heterogeneous mixtures containsubstances that are not evenly distributed.
