![]() ![]() Above you can see the original ink inc logo included on this mock webpage I created for a job interview in the early 1990's. (Click here for a closer view) | I originally came up with the idea of the name "Ink Inc" for a graphic design company while I was in Senior College Ballyfermot, Dublin, Ireland where I studied from 1991 to 1992 before taking a four-year degree course in DIT Mountjoy Square (then known as the College of Marketing and Design). My graphic design teacher, who had given us a project to create our own company logo, really liked my logo and suggested I register the name ASAP. Even while I was designing the thumbnails for it I felt someone else had probably already come up with the idea, but following my teacher's advice I checked it out at the Irish companies registration office. I was disappointed but not entirely surprised to find someone had indeed registered a similar name. My teacher expressed disappointment too, although I went on to achieve a Distinction in Graphic Design at graduation so it was hardly a crushing blow. Then I pretty much shelved (if not gave up on) the idea and quite regret doing so, because in the intervening years several other companies - some quite successful - popped up with close variations on the name. Not only in Ireland but on the international scene, so I couldn't be cynical enough to assume that some people who had seen my portfolio might have ripped me off. Heaven forbid! So, to avoid any potential conflicts with others clamouring to say "hey - I was first", I've decided to compromise and make my own original variant. Hence, "Studio Ink Inc" is born. However, just so as not to sell out completely, the part of the new logo below the word "studio" is actually exactly the same as it always was - unchanged since I designed it aged 17. Almost half of my life ago. Dude, time flies!
