Beat Summer Boredom - part 2
More ways to beat the boredom of summer...
- Open a world of opportunities by donating your time and talents. Become a volunteer. Work with animals at your local zoo or library-- I mean, sort books and read stories to adorable kids at the library. Help out at a nursing home or day care center. It'll provide relief from your boredom and possibly pave the way for a future job or career. Toward the end of summer, find a farmer or gardener with a resberry, strawberry, or bean patch. Ask if you can pick a few pints, then take these delights to elderly folks at a nursing home.
- Make a list. Jot down things you want to accomplish before school starts. For example ~ Start a hobby. It doesn't have to be expensive, just a little something to keep you busy. Go for walks daily and pick up random things from nature. But please leave the squirrels in their natural habitats! ~ Learn a new sport. Try hackysack or handball or learn to double dutch. Or start preparing now to make the school step team or chorus in the fall. Learn how to walk in stiltz, jump on a pogo stick, or ride a unicycle. ~ Let books lead you to new adventures. Read Thoreau's 'Walden' and spend a night alone in the woods. Read 'The Adventures of Huckelberry Finn', then build a raft. Read Julius Caesar; afterward, make plans to take over the world.
Do something crazy.
- Don't make the whole summer a constructive experience. Be wacko. Go crazy. Do something silly! ~ Have a picnic lunch at the laundromat. ~ Go out in public, run up to a random person on a payphone, and yell, 'Quick! Get off the phone! My friend's in trouble! What's the number for 911?!' ~ Rent a movie with friends that promises to be truely awful (a bad script, bad acting, or bad special effects. Old japanese movies are great for this!) and make fun of it together. Make it a contest: whoever chooses the worst movie doesn't have to pay for the rental. ~ Put up the fake Christmas tree (or haunukka bush) in the living room. ~ Eat lunch at McDonald's in your little brother's Halloween costume. ~ Host a scavenger hunt inside the library... But remember to keep quiet! ~ Buy some helium ballons, inhale the helium, then leave crazy messages on your friends' and relatives answering machines.
