Collin Lives at Home Now

(Inside the mind of a college-bound dancer)

My brother Collin is living at home this year. He left the
middle-of-nowhere hell-hole of a University of the South
for his dear and loving girl. But she isn’t dear and loving
to him now.
They broke up right after Collin left Sewanee and he didn’t get into
UGA…he didn’t want to be with that girl, anyway.
Now Collin lives at home he worked as a bagel boy all summer
and smoked a pack and a half a day, got baked with the bagels
and lost so many brain cells he didn’t know where he was
anymore.
So Collin the baked bagel boy is a student at Georgia State and
wants to be an actor but he isn’t majoring in theater, he’s in English
because our mother did that and that’s what Collin was thinking then.
He’s gonna be a great actor but he’s gotta work for it now
and I love my brother a lot and I’m real proud.
He tells me how he admires me because I know what I want to do
with my life. Yeah, I know what I want but how am I supposed to
get there?
I’m going to college next year, but what does any director care
if you have a B.A. or a B.F.A. in dance? All they care is that you’re good.
Am I good? I dunno. But I’m gonna be a great dancer
and I’m gonna be a world-famous choreographer
and Miss Iris Hensley is going to come crawling back to me
and she’s gonna ask me to return to that Marietta-based company
I’m with now and I’m gonna say I gotta go I got better things to do
right now than look back on a company I was with years ago.
I’ll say Miss Iris, I’m headed off to New York to work with Mark Morris,
Twila Tharp, all the Rebekah Ramsays of the world and I ain’t never
coming back to you.
I got a wedding to plan for myself, a college to drop out of, and a thousand
fans waiting for the show to open. So you just go back to that
Marietta-based company of your and tell Gina I said goodbye.

Collin admires me because I know what I want to do with my life.
He’s living at home now and smokes a pack and a half
a day after getting screwed over by that UGA girl.
He quit the bagel thing a while back.
