While grabbing some lunch and a beer on a snowboarding trip with one of my customers from Drive Train Industries, the topic of travels came up. Ed Werry told me about the great adventures he had in the Coast Guard. "The what?" was my question. Being from Colorado you don't get much exposure to the maritime community. He told me about going to Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Rim and it really caught my attention. I hounded him for more information and even told my brother about it. We made an appointment to go see the recruiter and after a few months of contemplation we decided to give it a try. Those few months turned into a wait that lasted over a year. There aren't many people enlisted from the Rocky Mountain region and every slot had been filled for quite some time to come. Eventually our time came and James and I went off to start another one of our adventures.

In everyone's life there are some days that stand out as being significant. May 1st, 1995 is one of those days for me. That was the day my brother James and I left Colorado and headed east to Cape May, New Jersey to start bootcamp. Coast Guard bootcamp is similar to all the other bootcamp programs, shaved heads, push ups, maniacal instructors, push ups, twenty hour days, push ups, unforgettable memories, push ups, you get the idea. It was a tough eight weeks for the 40 or so souls that made up recruit company ROMEO-146, looking back it could have been a lot harder and we would have all still made it.
