The O.C.'s Gay Affair: Is It Over?
by Daniel R. Coleridge
March 17, 2005
When Marissa turned all the laundry pink
on last week's O.C., her days of bicurious bliss with Alex appeared numbered.
Especially after she lied about her whereabouts to hang out all night with ex-BF
Ryan. Are these Newport Beach girls headed for Splitsville? Say it ain't so —
they shared one of TV's 20 Best Same-Sex Kisses! We recently caught up with
birthday girl Olivia Wilde (who just turned 21) for a grilling about the fate of
her on-screen relationship with Mischa Barton. And speaking of hot kisses, have
you heard about the one Wilde shared with Justin Timberlake? Read on for the
TVGuide.com exclusive....
TVGuide.com:
What's your take on Alex and Marissa's rocky romance?
Olivia Wilde: Right now, the relationship is at its height. Marissa's
moved in and we're fighting, but we're also kissing. It's very realistic. It's
not all fun and it's not all misery; it's a balance.
TVG:
Didn't they shack up a bit prematurely? They're both so young.
Wilde: Marissa was going to move out one way or another, and Alex
represents everything about freedom that she doesn't have.
TVG:
She seems bent on irritating her mom, Julie. Is Marissa just "trying out" the
gay thing on a lark?
Wilde: I don't think Marissa's just experimenting. I don't think it's one
of those situations. I think it's real. She's not doing it for selfish reasons.
She really was taken by Alex. She didn't plan it just to be rebellious, like,
"Where's a girl I can make out with? She'll do!"
TVG:
Are they destined to crash and burn like most O.C. couples?
Wilde: No. It's funny how on The O.C., if somebody breaks up, the other
person has to move away. There's no coexisting with exes. We broke up, so you'll
have to move. Alex is a free spirit. She doesn't stay in one place for very
long. She could come back, she could leave, whatever.
TVG: So
they are headed for the end.
Wilde: I don't know what'll happen with them. It's unpredictable because
they're really into each other, but Marissa's got a lot to figure out about
herself, and Alex is very young and has a lot of exploring left to do. Who
knows?
TVG:
What will you do once Alex's run is done?
Wilde: I shot three movies while I was doing The O.C. I did Alpha Dog, a
Nick Cassavetes movie with Justin Timberlake, Bruce Willis and Sharon Stone.
That's probably coming out at the end of summer/beginning of fall. I'm Emile
Hirsch's crazy, violent nymphomaniac girlfriend.
TVG:
Did you share any juicy scenes with Mr. J.T.?
Wilde: He's so cute. I got to kiss him — it was the highlight of my life!
It was very innocent and he apologized afterward three times for invading my
privacy. He's the most amazing Southern gentleman you'll ever meet.
TVG:
Why the apologies? Did he slip you tongue?
Wilde: [Laughs] No tongue, but it was an unexpected, impromptu kiss. The
director told him to do it behind my back. That's why you'll see a look of
complete and utter shock and amazement on my face. Whoa! The reason he's so hot
is he's amazing-looking, he's pure sex, he's...
TVG:
He's got you "nekkid by the end of this song."
Wilde: Nekkid by the end of this song, yeah! But he's very gentlemanly
and respectful and very in love with his girlfriend [Cameron Diaz]. That's why
he's hot.
TVG:
What were the other two films you did?
Wilde: I did a comedy with Patrick Fugit called — get this title —
Bickford Shmeckler's Cool Ideas. It's really funny, very quirky, kind of in the
vein of '80s comedies. Then I did a film with Helena Bonham Carter and Aaron
Eckhart called Conversations with Other Women. [Carter's] married to [director]
Tim Burton. I'm so jealous of their kids — they must have the coolest toys!
