The Simpsons is an Emmy and Peabody Award -winning American animated sitcom created by Matt Groening for the Fox Network . It is a satirical parody of the " Middle American " lifestyle epitomized by its title family , consisting of Homer , Marge , Bart , Lisa and Maggie . Set in the fictional town of Springfield , the show lampoons many aspects of the human condition, as well as American culture , society as a whole and even television itself.

The family was conceived by Groening shortly before a pitch for a series of animated shorts with James L. Brooks . He sketched out his version of a dysfunctional family, and named the characters after members of his own family, substituting Bart for his own name. [1] The shorts became a part of The Tracey Ullman Show on April 19 , 1987 . [2] After a three-season run, the sketch was developed into a half-hour prime time show.

Malcolm in the Middle is a five-time Emmy , Grammy -winning and thrice-nominated Golden Globe American situation comedy created by Linwood Boomer for the Fox Network .

The show starred Frankie Muniz as Malcolm , the third-oldest of four, later five, children in the family. The oldest child, Francis , was shipped off to military school , leaving the three boys: Reese , Malcolm, and Dewey living at home, Malcolm being the second oldest of the three (hence the title of the show). The situation centered on Malcolm and his dysfunctional family 's life.

The series was different from many others in that Malcolm broke the fourth wall and talked directly to the viewer, it was shot using a single camera , and it used neither a laugh track nor a live studio audience . Like most hour-long dramas, this half-hour show was shot on film instead of video. As a midseason replacement , the show quickly gained a large viewer base, starting off with ratings of 23 million for the debut episode and 26 million for the second episode. [ citation needed ]

The title character is Gordon Shumway , an alien nicknamed A.L.F. (Alien Life Form). He was born on October 28 , 1756 on the Lower East side of the planet Melmac . The planet Melmac was located six parsecs past the Hydra-Centaurus Supercluster and had a green sky, blue grass and a purple sun. The commonly-used currency is "Foam".

Shumway's body is covered with orange fur. He has a rippled snout, facial moles, eight stomachs, and he likes to eat cats (tabbies have been rumored as a favorite, but his preferred snack has not been definitively stated). He attended high school for 122 years and was captain of a Bouillabaisseball team (which is played on ice using shellfish as a ball).

In the pilot episode , Shumway follows an amateur radio signal and crash-lands into the garage of the Tanners. The Tanners are a suburban middle class family consisting of the social worker Willie ( Max Wright ), his wife Kate ( Anne Schedeen ), their children Lynn ( Andrea Elson ) and Brian ( Benji Gregory Hertzberg ), and the cat Lucky.
