SU, Schizophrenics Understood, is a nonprofit, tax-exempt, self-help organization made up of consumers, family members, professionals, and other concerned persons.

We offer meetings, networking, and advocacy. We provide opportunites for growth and development to people coping with a serious mental illness. We take our responsibility to one another very seriously.

Schizophrenia is a brain and mind disorder that affects approximately one person in 100. It is known to be primarily a thought disorder due to a chemical imbalance in the brain.

Typically, schizophrenia is characterized by the following symptoms:

Schizophrenia has a number of subtypes, including acute, catatonic, and paranoid. Each of these types may take on variations of the characteristics listed above.

The outlook for persons with schizophrenia is hopeful. With in-depth research, destigmatization, improved drug treatment, and better coping skills, persons with schizophrenia can enjoy a fulfilling life.
