What Are Ghosts
A problem that we, as paranormal investigators, face today is the lack of accurate information about our subject of interests, ghosts. There are many theories about what, exactly, ghosts are, but little hard evidence of them.
Many of our theories are presented by skeptical scientists that suggest mass hallucination, elaborate hoaxes, and other such instances of falsehood in the realm of the paranormal. Many scientists would claim that the paranormal does not exist.
However, on the other side, there are many paranormal investigators and mediums that theorize that the paranormal are images of a parallel universe, imprints of a strong moment in a person’s life, and other instances such as these.
Which is true? While it is difficult, if not impossible, to prove definitely that the paranormal exists, paranormal investigators still are out there attempting this feat. For now, it is impossible to tell which theory is “right” when it comes to ghosts.
Like many in the paranormal field of study, we of the Midwest Paranormal Investigation Team have our own theories on what we are studying.
Maggie’s Theory: I believe that spirits (ghosts) are the spirits or souls of human beings. When we die, under normal circumstances, our spirits travel to a place of reflection and rest, where we learn from our lifetime and make steps toward enlightenment. When we feel that we have learned all that can be learned from our life, we choose when and where to be born again.
Sometimes, however, we do not experience what our spirits had envisioned for us during our lifetime. Sometimes our lives are cut short by an unperceived event, or sometimes we do not find our way to our proper place. Sometimes the life we lead means so much to our spirit that it has trouble letting go of it. In these instances, and many other instances like them, our spirits are trapped in our realm of perception. These trapped spirits are what we perceive as ghosts.
Ghosts are not all-knowing, they aren’t granted special powers upon death, and they are not “evil”. Ghosts tend to take on the personality of their past life, simply because that personality is trapped with them. While no ghost is “evil”, they can be malicious or hostile, if that is in their personality.
Ghosts themselves can not physically harm a living being. They can, however, manipulate physical objects to harm a person and they can harm the person’s spirit (which can sometimes lead to “reflections” of these injuries on the physical body). Ghosts can, however, affect a person’s mental or emotional state, causing the victim to feel that he or she is going insane (hearing voices, seeing things out of the corner of the eye, feelings of being watched) or causing a rapid change in mood.
Ghosts should be taken seriously at all times, and one must always remember that they are PEOPLE! Treat them as you would treat a human being – with respect and kindness. Many spirits that are malicious or hostile are like that for a reason. They might not realize that they are dead, leading them to be highly confused as to why no one will recognize that they are there (imagine living a life where everyone ignores you, no one even gives you the courtesy of respect, and no one listens to your needs). They might find that a person they are in contact with reminds them of someone they knew in life that mistreated them. They might be angry at their death, or prejudiced against a certain race, sex, religion, or age. The reasons are endless, but rarely are they hostile or malicious due to it being their nature. For this reason, the investigator must realize that, if he or she helps to counsel the spirit, they will usually realize what their problem is and work to solve it. Many times, just listening or communicating with a hostile or malicious spirit is enough to drastically change their mood. Many times, as well, it will allow them to move on to their proper place as well.
Under no circumstances should spirits ever be “driven” out of a house or away from a site. Usually, banishing spirits does not have them go to their proper place, but just move on to another location, generally in a worse mood than they began. It is far better to communicate with the spirit as a human, and with respect, and have them move on through their own means and in their own time.
All in all, it is best to remember at all times that spirits are human, just like we are. They should be treated as such.
