Gay-Straight Alliance

Concord High School

The Gay-Straight Alliance of Concord High is an open sanctuary for anyone who wants to come and talk about who you are and nor be ashamed of it. You dont even have to talk at all, if you just want to come for the environment of it, thats fine! We provide a comfortable atmosphere for people to be themselves without fear of discrimination or criticism.

WHERE AND WHEN? Yet to be determined so far, as we are still looking for an advisor.

WHY? Our main reason for doing this is for us. To be able to come to school knowing that there will be a place that will accept you. no judgements passed, no stones thrown, no tounges cried out. We are doing this for the spirit of community, for that fact that it's easy to survive if you stick together. Our other reason is knowledge. To spread use it and to spread it. People fear what they don't understand. this is why it's important for us to let people know that we're here, we're real, and we wont just go away if you ignore us. But it's not all about that GLBT kids either. Straight people are vastly affected by homophobia. Between gender roles and peer pressure to pick on other people, it can sometimes get just as hard for open-minded straight kids to get around.

HOW CAN WE CHANGE THINGS? There's lots of things we can do! First of all, having this group establishes in the first place is a big help to people who share "those" feelings even if they dont come. Just knowing that it exists can sometimes be enough. We also plan to teach. Teach the teachers! We are in the process of gently letting the teachers know that "those" kids ARE in their classroom and they ARE being harassed. We need to let teachers know how they can handle situations like that to help put to an end (or at least decrease) the amount of expressed hatred and bigotry in the classroom. How exactly will we do that? That's where you come in. Network. Let teachers know whats going on. They cant exactly help you if they dont know whats going on. If you think a teacher will openly support and empowerment of GLBT teens, ask them to be an "ally", someone who kids know they can talk to.
