HISTORY

Snowboarding was created by more than one person, there are a few people who are credited with creating the sport. They are Sherman Poppen, Jake Burton, Demetrije Milovich, and Tom Sims.

Sherman Poppen helped create it when he attached two skis together for his daughter so she could “surf” down a hill. They then combined the words snow and surf to come up with the “Snurfer”. This is one of the earliest recorded snowboards.

In the mid 70’s Jake Burton used his skills as a carpenter to begin modifying the Snurfer. He modified it by shaping the board out of wood and then making rubber straps for bindings. He then wanted to bring snowboarding to the world. So he started making more snowboards in his garage in Vermont. His hard work obviously paid off, he is now the owner of Burton Snowboards, one of the most respected snowboard companies in the world. Likewise Tom Sims worked hard around the same time and now owns Sims Snowboarding. Without their hard work and desire to show the world snowboarding the sport wouldn’t exist.
