Broomball

Date: 1/17/05 >>> Broomballs are flying!

What is Broomball? Broomball is very similar to Hockey. In the game of Broomball instead of Hockey sticks, Broomsticks are used. Instead of Hockey pucks, Broomballs are used. In Broomball there are no skates, but the ice remains. The rules are nearly the same except all players must have a regulation Broomball stick and a regulation helmet.

Date: 1/30/05 >>> Game Equipment

There are several things that are a necessity when playing the dangerous sport of Broomball.

1. Helmet

The helmet is meant to protect the head in case of falling on the ground or the ball flying up and hitting you.

2. Pads

Though pads are used for protection of the lower leg area they are also put to good use by giving the player the ability to slide without harming their legs.

3. Brooms

The game of Broomball can't be played without a good broom. These brooms are used to swap at the ball. There are many types ways to make brooms. You can have a scoop for more manipulation of the ball or have a rock hard block on a stick to badger the ball as hard as you can. (I own and prefer the scoop). The brooms are usually duck taped over entirely after being cut to a length no smaller than 6". A good layer should be applied so that the broom is properly protected from shattering when it is beaten on the ice. After the broom has a good layer or two of duck tape its a good idea to add some athlectic or hockey tape so that the broom will stay warm and not freeze up. All brooms must be made to regulation and be able to flex a little at the end. A good way to make a broom have a better grip would be to roll up some duck tape into string and revolve it around the shaft to create a grip that fits your fingers. To make sure that the broom won't come out of your hands while your on the ice caps are made at the end of the shaft. Well, thats pretty much it. My broom is the farthest to the left of the broom pictures.

Ball and Goal

Just like soccer and hockey the main purpose of the game is to get the ball in the goal.

Face Off

The face off is played out exactly as hockey in that the ball is dropped in the center by the ref and each of the two players that are located in the center have to try to get the ball to their opponents side in order to score.

Half Time

Half time is very short in Broomball. This is the point in the game where the team can make adjustments with there players and have the subs sub in. Each team then switches sides and the game starts back up within a matter of a couple of minutes.

Date: 1/17/05 >>> Broomball Update 1

I will be playing Broomball as soon as my team can find a helmet that will fit on my BIG HEAD. The first game that we had was canceled, but the second game was played today and it was pretty crazy. The score was 2 - 3. We almost had them. We are only a freshmen team though so we'll have to work at it. Hopefully the weather ends up getting better over time. It was -10 for todays game and thats just a bit on the cold side.

Date: 1/27/05 Broomball Update 2

We lost another two games. The second game's score was 1-4. The third game's score was 2-3. We should have won this game. I'm not going to mention anyone's name *Cough* James, but if it weren't for him we would have won.
