Welcome to the TimeSpace, a perspective on dissociative conditions, including what psychologists term "dissociative identity disorder", "multiple personality disorder", and DDNOS (dissociative disorder not otherwise specified). This site was created to help those who have been given these diagnoses with understanding themselves, coping with life, and to remind people that they, like everybody, have the ability to see everything in multiple ways by taking different perspectives, but that those who are multiple or "plural" tend to experience this in a much more dramatic way.
This site is a work in progress. Feel free to email me with comments and questions, or visit my weblog, where you can read further missives and post comments. This is the first major update since this site's conception in the late 1990's and its first actual update since 2001. As time goes on and knowledge is gained, perspectives change. Over the years I realize I believe less and less in the concept of "mental illness" and other negative labels like "disease", "disorder", and people who tell those of us who have received these diagnoses from a medical professional that we are "sick" and need to "get help," and then make us pay money to "fix" ourselves.
This site focuses primarily on dissociatives conditions but also could be useful to those diagnosed with a variety of psychiatric conditions.
Keep in mind that the meaning of a mental disorder describes a pattern of functioning that interferes with a person's well-being in some way, and thereby causes the person distress. In this society, it is often the SOCIETY that feels the distress based on the "disordered" person's pattern of functioning. Often the disordered person doesn't believe they have a problem. In actuality, they don't, and neither does the "normal" person who is distressed by this disordered person's behavior - so the real problem is how the two "sides" can learn to understand each other and compromise, so both sides can effectively get what they need. This can only be done by seeing the other's perspective - putting yourself in their "SPACE" or frame of mind, and vice versa.
The other element is TIME. A person's behavior doesn't typically become disordered overnight, nor were they always disordered or defective. People have many experiences (often negative) over many years that contribute to a person feeling and acting in ways that are less than ideal. The only way to understand this is by really knowing a person, and understanding that their life events all contribute to their unique perspective.
Time, also is not just what we experience looking at the clock. There are past lives influencing us (which may not be our own), and there are places we travel to when not "awake" (such as while dreaming, or "dissociating" in another personality state). This is yet another element that TimeSpace will look into.
