Ingots Casting

So I thought I cast some ingots (preclean bars of aluminum)because I am really bored and have nothing to do so lets cast some ingots.

I started preheating the oil burner with the propane burner. Then I added alittle oil to the oil burner to help preheat it faster,Thats why the flame so yellow instead of a blue color.

Just a different view.

After 3minutes of preheating the burner,It is time to turn on the oil valve on the burner.I turn on the blower and let the oil burner get nice a hot.Takes about 10 minutes to get it up to its highest temperature. Now that the burner and the furnace are up too temperature.

Time to added the metal too the crucible.

I am adding the aluminum door frame to the furnace.(BTW this is very good stuff to melt down)

The door frame is all melted down into the crucible.I then cleaned slag(or dross) of the top of aluminum and add some salt/flux to take even more slag of of it.

btw you probly saw the yellow on the other side of the crucible. That means it vary hot about 2300degrees. now thats hot.

here is a few ingots casted.

The mold I'm using is an old bed frame that I just tilted up right and put little pile of sand every foot on the bed frame. It's a cheap none welding ingot mold

ok time for round three for casting ingots. This time I'm adding some nice 2"dia alum pipe.

well I am all done casting ingots for tonight.

Time to see how the oil burner doing. The last few times the oil burner has been runing,The refractory beening melting a little by little.

MAN!!,I need better refractory this doesn't hold up like I wish it did.I would of bin fine if I didn't use the oildripping pipe.It just get's way to hot useing that way to burn oil.

I have about 10 or more times left in the oil burner before it comply melts away. The new one im going to build will use 3200deg commercial refractory cement.

Well at lest I got some ingots casted about 10 lb or some.

This is a neat picture of the inside of the furnace. The camera didn't take the photo right(I should of turn the flash on)

The next day I thought that I put the rest of my scrap metal into ingots. Here are a few more pictures.

Here I go adding metal to the crucible.

The aluminum is all melted and is time to clean out the slag off the top of the cruicble.

I took most of the slag out of the crucible.I just need to add some salt to the metal to get every last bit of slag out of there.

There's me pouring the aluminum(notice the welding helmet and gloves)

well there is my ingots casting hope you all like it(I know I did)

I now have 50lbs of aluminum all together that should last me a while.
