When the US Highway system was created in 1926, US 12 did not enter Idaho. US 410 followed US 12's current path through Washington (except from Naches to Elma) and briefly entered Idaho at the time. US 12 was extended across Lolo Pass in 1962 (along former Idaho 9) to Lewiston, and ended at the aforementioned US 95/410 junction (so both US 12 and US 410 ended at the same point). Five years later, someone with WSDOT realized the madness of it all and extended US 12 along US 410's old corridor.
