The Cold War

The Cold War was a state of political tension and

military rivalry between the Soviet Union and the

United States that stopped short of full-scale

war. The Cold War “…was an arms race that held out

the possibility – because it generated the

capability – of ending civilization altogether”

(Jones 22) It also “…was simply the unrestricted arms

race between the superpowers and the state of

hostility between them that continually threatened

to erupt into a worldwide holocaust. […] the Cold

War did not begin until 1948. Only then did

military spending, the American atomic stockpile,

and the numbers of men under arms in both camps

begin to rise suddenly.” (Jones 79) Previous: To Bomb or To Die: Intro
