Air Transportation

Social and
Environmental
Impacts
Early pilots were always looking for good uses for their planes. The first important showing of air freight occurred in Nov. 1910 when a department store shipped a load of silk by air from Dayton to Colombus Ohio. Airlines across the country flew freight in the late 1920's, helping American businesses when they needed parts or wares as quickly as possible. The invention of air travel made it so that fewer people had to transport less merchandise on ground. During the 1920's, the volume of freight shipped by air grew significantly. In 1927, only 45,859 pounds (20,801 kilograms) were shipped. By 1929, the figure had grown to 257,443 pounds (116,774 kilograms), and by 1931, only 21 years after the first cargo shipment, they were shipping more than 1 miilion pounds (453,592 kilograms) per year.
Air freight helps people because travelling by air is faster, quicker, and less of a nuisance than travelling by land. It is more efficient than land transport because it can travel a far bigger distance in a much smaller time. It is better than other means of transportation beacause it makes it easier to get merchandise from one place to another. Land and sea transportation are slow and costly, but air transport can carry freight at huge speeds for fairly low costs. It is also an advantage because travelling by air can take you places that most vehicles couldn't; like overseas and to places surrounded by rough terrain.
