Daily everything under the Sun
"What doesn't kill us makes us strong" can be said with absolute certainty about working as a Journalist on a tabloid daily.
The Ottawa Sun provided me the opportunity to experience virtually every facet of daily newspaper work, from covering news through advertising to design and layout.
I researched, interviewed for and wrote national, provincial, regional and local news stories. My work also involved writing election, hi-tech/Y2K, education, weather and other articles.
For Sun supplements, I did advertorials and public information pieces for regular and special sections, took photos, and edited and did the design and layout of business and advertising sections. As well, I filled in for the Sun's supplements editor for two months. The work included interviewing, writing information pieces and advertorials, editing, photography, and design and layout.
In addition, I created a potential new Sun
section, "Successfully Single". The work involved recruiting columnists,
writing articles and reviews, taking photographs, editing, and design and layout.
