Community paper trial by furor

The Algonquin Times gave me my first opportunity, as Editorial Editor and Journalist, to participate in every stage of broadsheet newspaper production.

The work included writing news articles and briefs, features, and community pieces, and compiling streeters. As well, it covered copy editing and photography, and design, layout and production... a vertical learning curve.

I especially enjoyed the full-length feature writing I was tasked with – the article coinciding with the 85th anniversary of the Château Laurier Hotel, for example, and the piece about highly entertaining City of Ottawa councillor Richard Cannings.

In addition, I co-ordinated an anniversary issue of The Times as editor and design/ layout editor. The work involved organizing staff writers, researching and interviewing, writing features and copy editing, writing and designing advertising copy and art, and design, layout and production.

I got my first taste of Web work when I assumed responsibility for Algonquin Times On-line. The work encompassed writing articles, designing pages and graphics, and regular updating of site content.
