How to Finish All Purses

Cutting Paper Tiles
For precise paper mosaic tiles you can cut papers and poster board on a
protective cutting mat with a rotary cutter, using your cutting grid as a guide.
The round cutting blade will fit inside the slots of the grid nicely.

Preparing Purses for Mosaic Tiling
1. Lightly sand wood and any sticker lable residue. Wipe clean with tack clock.
2. Paint the purse, inside then outside with black using flat paintbrush.
Note: You may leave the center of surfaces that will be covered by a veneer,
unpainted. Refer to "Mosaic Veneer Sheets - Technique II" (left image) below.

Direct Application Mosaics - Technique I

(Applying reinforced paper mosaic pieces directly to the wood)
1. Cut an 8 1/2" x 11" piece of poster board.
2. Cut paper down to 8 1/2 x 11" and run through the Xyron machine,
face up, to add adhesive.
3. Secure paper to board and roll over surface with brayer to prevent air pockets.
4. Cut desired sized shapes with rotary cutter through the slots
in the Shape Cut grid, working over a protective (soft) mat.
5. Secure backed shapes to painted wood purse using Tacky glue, leaving
1/32" spaces between to look like grout.

Mosaic Veneer Sheets - Technique II

(Applying paper mosaic pieces to a posterboard veneer)
1. Make paper patterns of the wood purse surface, top and side panels
by tracing the outlines.
2. Place patterns on poster board leaving a 1" space between each shape.
Cut board 2" larger all around.
4. Place paper on cutting mat, and place Shape Cut grid on paper.
Cut desired strip widths through slots with rotary cutter.
5. Form squares or rectangles by turning Shape Cut grid 1/4 turn. Slice thru slots
6. Apply Tacky Glue on poster board and secure paper shapes,
leaving 1/32" spaces in between (to look like grout lines).
7. Allow veneers to dry flat, or sandwich between waxed paper and place
under a stack of heavy books.

PURSE PROJECTS

Chai 'N Berry Flowers Purse (demo project)
1.Follow steps 1-5 of Direct Application Mosaics Technique I (above)
using a sheet of Cobblestone Chai Latte and Cobblestone Merlot.
2. To make flowers, die cut (or cut out) 2 large and one small daisy
flowers from poster board.
3. Cut small random shapes (with straight edges like broken china)
from the Chai Latte and Merlot scraps, and from a small piece of
Cobblestone Berry Tempting with scissors.
4. Apply Tacky glue to flower center and secure Chai pieces leaving 1/32"
space between (faux grout lines).
5. Secure Merlot tiles to petals, placing a few Berry tiles on
the right side of each for highlights.
6. Curl petals upward for dimension. Apply glue to the BACK of the
flower's center circle only and press onto purse. Let dry 30 minutes
then finish purse following instructions below.

Fall Colored "V" Shaped Purse
NOTE: Form one pattern for the top panel. This will be cut apart later
so the purse is able to be opened (see photo above).
1. Follow Veneer Technique II (above) to create panel patterns and mosaic veneers
for the front, back, top, and two side surfaces of purse, using the following papers:
Caymans paper: Raisin, Orange Extreme and Wet Sand
Vary the size of shapes and color placement for interest.
2. Trace patterns onto the back side of veneers, then cut 1/32" smaller
then patterns on all sides using scissors.
3. Prepare purse (details above) and let dry.
4. Run the veneer pieces FACE UP through the Xyron to add adhesive.
5. Line up the veneer shapes and secure to the purse. Roll over surfaces with brayer.

'D' Shaped Purple & Blue Purse

1. Follow Veneer Technique II (above) to create a 'D' shaped pattern.
2. Decorate textured paper by applying random strokes of color
using ink pads. Allow ink to dry 10 minutes before cutting.
Make two mosaic veneers (purse front and back) using the following papers:
Caymans Aphrodite Blue (surface brushed with Royal Purple pad),
Cobblestone Aster (with Blazing Red zebra stripe pattern added),
Cobblestone Lavender Gray (with strokes of purple and 'smears' of red ink),
and undecorated Cobblestone Plum Yum. Vary the size of shapes and
color placement for interest.
3. Trace pattern on the back side of veneers, then cut 1/32" smaller
all around using scissors.
4. Prepare purse (details above) and let dry.
5. Run the veneer pieces FACE UP through the Xyron to add adhesive.
6. Line up the veneer shapes and secure to the purse.
Roll over surfaces with brayer.

Pink and Black Stripe

1. Create a pattern for the top surface of purse, following step one
of "Mosaic Veneer Sheets Technique II" above.
2. Cut and secure a panel of pre-backed (with poster board) Tourmaline Jewel
paper that is 1/32" smaller all around then purse top pattern.
3. From this point, follow Direct Application Mosaics Technique I (above)
to cover all four side edges of purse.
4. Cut 1/2" wide strips of pre-backed (with poster board)
Cobblestone Hematite and Shell Pink Serendipity textured papers.
5. Clip strips to the length needed for the purse front and back sides only.
6. Secure strips vertically, beginning with the center strip, using Tacky Glue.
7. Clip strips to the length needed for the side panels (shorter)
and secure. When you reach the purse corners, you'll need to clip
a few angled strips to fit lower corner areas.

Finishing ALL Purses

1. Apply a coat of Instant Decoupage over the entire purse surface and let dry.
This seals the papers and painted areas.
2. Spray the purse surfaces with Polyurethane. Let dry, then spray one more time.
3. Make a tissue paper pattern of purse inside surfaces by pressing
into area and creasing edges. Mark with felt pen. (see photo above)
4. Cut pattern 1/2" larger all around and adjust as needed for felt to fit.

5. Trace pattern onto felt FRONT (fuzzy side) using chalk pencil. Remove
release paper and secure inside purse.
6. Attach hinges using screw driver. Mark placement of new latch with chalk
pencil, and attach.
7. Mark placement of handle hardware, place ring under metal plaque
and attach with provided screws.
