Kids Room Decor'
by Shirley Rufener, CPD
on the AM Northwest Show 7-21-05

It's fun to decorate kids rooms with cool colors and a unique style!
Try using bright Permapaque paint markers and fabulous
Fabric Paper prints! The techiniques are as easy as coloring in a color book...
creating giant stickers for a canvas, and adding fun doodles with markers.
The kids themselves can embellish a lampshade, or try making
a summer placemat, coaster or simple bookmark!

FRAME & Bookmark INSTRUCTIONS
(TV Demo)

1. Cut out a 10" wide x 12" high piece of canvas with heavy scissors.
2. Secure a 10" x 12" Fabric Paper sheet (sample design is "Black" #FP1491
from "Fonts Ensemble") to one side using decoupage medium and allow to dry.
3. Draw or trace a curve at the top (a large round plate,
record album or plastic lid may help).
4. Use a 5 x 7 piece of Fabric Paper from a Michael Miller Ensemble and
trace frame opening in center of canvas side. Now use ruler to draw
a rectangle opening 1/8" smaller
and cut this opening shape from frame with small pointed scissors (or a craft blade).
5. Cut around top curve.
6. Die cut one large daisy and 2 small daisies
and paint with shades of blue and green Permapaque markers.
7. When dry, use a circle template to draw a black circle around the flower center.
8. Curl petals upward and secure randomly around shade with Fast Grab Tacky Glue.
9. Apply a coat of decoupage medium to Fabric Paper frame
surface and to painted flowers, and let dry.
10. Secure flowers to frame as shown using Fast Grab Tacky Glue.
11. Secure canvas to acrylic frame using extra strong double side tape.

BOOKMARK
When painting a bookmark with Permapaque markers, cut canvas larger than bookmark at first.
Trace design in pencil if desired then color in. Designs are easily found in
coloring books, or online. I use circle stencils for many of my designs.

To add a shaded effect to flower center of placemat (or bookmark), scribble an orange
Permapaque marker out onto a piece of plastic. Add orange directly to the top half of
the thick end of a yellow marker and paint color onto area. Cut to 1 3/4" x 5 1/2" with
slicer/trimmer or scissors. When paint is dry, apply 1-2 coats of decoupage medium to both
sides and let dry. Punch a hole near the top center and tie on a tassel or 7" piece of ribbon.

Canvas Floorcloth

1. Select nine sheets of 12" square Fabric Paper for your floorcloth
sections and border. I used Michael Miller's Ensembles: Aqua Disco Dots #FP9011
and Tropical Breeze #FP903, and single 12" sheets of Vine Heart/Lime and
Hypnosis/Lime.
2. Choose Fabric Paper for alphabet letters and numbers, I used
White #FP1488 (black with white polka dots) and Black FGJET
from the Fonts Ensemble.
3. Cut four 12" sheets corner to corner (diagonally) to use
for the bottom half of the floorcloth design.
4. Cut 2" off of the top edge of two different sheets (#5 and #6 sections).
5. To make border, cut two 12" sheets entirely into 2" squares. (I used a
paper slicer/trimmer.)
6. Cut several 7/8" wide strips of black and Mermaid and run through the
sticker maker to add adhesive. Die cut a complete uppercase alphabet and the heart
design in black, and lowercase letters and two stars in Mermaid. Also cut
single capital letters to spell P L A Y H O P S C O T C H from sticker strips.
7. Enlarge your favorite font (letters) to 5" high and print. Cut
out pattern letters, flip over to the back
side and trace onto back of fabric paper and cut shapes.
8. Cut a 32" x 58" canvas sheet with heavy scissors, and place on large work surface.
9. Position all Fabric Paper pieces onto canvas, and mark floorcloth outline
using yarstick and a pencil.
10. Peel backing paper and secure letters, (as shown in above
photo) centered, in each 2" border square.
11. Begin securing Fabric Paper shapes from the bottom left corner of canvas,
working towards to the top right corner to ensure everything fits well!
12. Secure the first 2" square (the letter "P") by applying decoupage medium to
the back using a paintbrush, and smoothing into place.
Next, secure the letter "A" to the left, and the Letter "L" to the right. Continue
the 2" border until you have secured the lowercase "c" and the
first uppercase "O" (in the word HOPSCOTCH).
13. Next you will secure two different printed triangles, touching
the 2" border edge as the fabric shrinks slightly when glazed.
14. When all background shapes are in place, secure 5" numbers
centered in the sections as shown in photo.
15. Apply a coat of the decoupage
medium to the floorcloth surface. Let dry, then apply a second coat,
and an optional third coat for a nice protected surface. Simply
wipe clean with a damp cloth!

Lamp

1. Lay the lampshade on the fabric and roll, marking the top
and bottom edges with a pencil.
2. Add an extra 1/2" to top and bottom edges, and 1" to the length,
and cut out fabric.
3. Make 1/4" long clips, 2" apart in the top edge so fabric
forms to the round shape.
4. Place fabric wrong (back) side up on a
protected work surface!
5. Spray entire shape with a light even coat of Reposition-It Tacky Glue.
Make a permanent finished seam on the right edge by folding
under 1/4". Finger press seam and allow fabric to partially dry (about 1 minute).
6. Secure fabric around shade beginning with the raw fabric edge at the
back (over shade seam). Smooth any wrinkles as you go.

7. Apply a thin line of Fast Grab Tacky glue to
the underside of the finished seam, and press to shade.
8. Fold over the top and bottom edges to
the inside and finger press securely.
9. Die cut 8-10 small daisies from canvas. Paint with blue and green
Permapaque markers and let dry.
10. Use a circle template to draw a black circle around the flower center.
11. Curl petals upward and secure randomly around shade with Fast Grab Tacky Glue.
12. Add trim along bottom edge of shade using Fast Grab Tacky glue and let dry.
