Basic Beginner Pop-Up Card Instructions

1. Gather all supplies listed above, it will save you time and make
things more fun while working.
2. Choose a beginner pattern from the Pop-Up Paper Structures book.
Note that the lines on the patterns are used for the following:

3. Pencil in lines on your smaller INNER piece of cardstock as
directed, then carefully use a metal edge ruler and X-Acto knife
to cut slits over the broken lines on pattern.

4. If using stickers as design elements, press them onto a coordinating
cardstock and cut around the outer shape with X-Acto knife leaving
a narrow border. This layer will give them the stability to stand up.

5. To make small holes for adding brads I use a pushpin.

Making a 90o Equal Generation Pop-Up (Intermediate Project-Show Demo)

1. Cut an inner piece of "Muslin Red Wagon" color cardstock to
5 1/2" x 11 1/2" with slicer or paper cutter.
2. I followed the basic card pattern on page 30 of "Pop-Up
Paper Structures" to draw the fold and cutting lines with a pencil.
*See pattern
at the very bottom of these instructions, which I have
altered to make a 12 x 6" square card.

3. Score the solid orange lines with a bone folder using ruler.
Cut over the black dotted lines with an X-Acto knife, working over a
cutting mat, using a metal edge ruler against the blade.

4. Now fold the solid purple lines with a mountain fold and the green lines a valley fold.

5. Your card should now have three equally high stair steps
for your elements.

6. Back each sticker with "Stippled Pearl" color cardstock following
step 3 above of "Basic Pop-Up Card Instructions").
7. Secure the text sticker above the top stair with foam dots (see
project photo above).
8. Secure a cardstock backed sticker, flat against each stair
with a glue stick or liquid glue. Do NOT use foam dots on STAIRS
(only on the inside card background), as the card will not
lay flat when closed.
9. Follow step 5 of "Basic Pop-Up Card Instructions" above to add
brads in each corner of the red cardstock layer only.
10. For the cover, cut a 12" sq. "Pearlized Empress Emerald" color
of cardstock in half for the outer card layer to make two 12" x 6"
pieces. Glue them together, back-to-back with a glue stick or two-sided
tape, so each side is metallic. Measure, score and fold the double
layer strip in half like a card.
11. Decorate the cover by cutting and securing a 5 3/4" square of
printed scrapbook paper using a glue stick. Secure the pop-up
card insert in place, with double-sided tape or a glue stick.
(See a photo of the card's cover below, in step two.)
12. Secure a cardstock backed larger sticker in the center of
the green cover with foam dots.

Making Your Own Square Envelopes

1. To make an envelope to fit over a 6" square pop-up card (which adds
thickness), cut a piece of (red) cardstock to a 9" square with a
paper trimmer/slicer.

2. Lay your finished card in the center with the cardstock turned
like a diamond shape as shown. Fold the four diamond points over
to the center of the card and crease with bone folder. Cut out
rounded "v" shapes at overlapping folded corners.
3. Remove card, and glue the side flaps, then the bottom flap
with liquid glue. Hold in place for 1-2 minutes. This takes longer,
but it seems to be the strongest for an envelope that will be
holding a lot of bulk.
4. Slide card in envelope. Seal envelope with a sticker or
use a double-sided tape runner.
