iphone Insert Basic Instructions

How To Create iphone Inserts

1. Gather all your supplies so you have everything within your reach. This
is especially important if you will be heat embossing your stamped designs.

2. If stamping the entire background of your iphone insert (such as with
the slapstick/cling "Crystal Pattern", refer to Rubber Stamping Techniques
below for instructions.

3. Place iphone case near a corner of the cardstock. Trace around your
iphone case and the opening in the top corner of case using a pencil. Cut
out the outer silhouette shape, just INSIDE the traced line. Turn a 3/8"
circle craft punch over to the backside and punch two holes, side by side,
just OUTSIDE the pencil line. The only pencil lines left showing should be
between the punched holes as shown.

4. Use a small pair of sharp pointed scissors to clip the triangles out
from the hole (or cut with an X-Acto craft knife over a cut proof mat).
Place the BACKSIDE of your pattern onto the BACKSIDE of a piece of Madison
printed paper (or cardstock), lined up with a corner edge. Trace the top and left
straight line areas only as shown. Do not
trace around the corners.

5. Use a paper slicer to cut the top and side edges of insert shape. For
the four corners, slide them into a Corner Rounder craft punch and press.

Rubber Stamping Techniques

Note: When creating a stamped image that will be layered on a printed
paper or cardstock background insert, start with a sheet of white from the
Storm Mix & Match cardstock and the stamp of your choice. Stamp should
ideally be a little more narrow then your cell phone cover.

1. IF you will be stamping a background stamp design insert, do this first.
Ink up the stamp with either an Onyx Black Versafine stamp pad, stamp and
emboss (as described in step 2 below), or, use more then one color of
Memento ink pads (overlapping colors), for a variegated look as shown above.

2. Place transparent stamps on a clear acrylic block, larger then the
design. Or, secure slapstick-cling stamps on the center of a 'stamp press'
tool (by Fiskars). Wood mounted stamps are used as is. Place white
cardstock on a flat even surface, apply ink from the Versafine Onyx Black
ink pad to the stamp and press firmly onto white cardstock. Place the
cardstock on a piece of scrap paper that's folded in half and immediately
pour embossing powder generously over the wet stamped design. Allow
powder to cover image lines then pour excess onto the folded paper. Tap
over your thumb)the back of your stamped image a few times to remove excess
powder from your image background. Bring sides of paper together about 3"
apart, allow powder to gather in the folded crease and funnel back into the
powder container, to save it. Heat the powdered design with heat tool until
it looks shiny and raised (embossed). The black ink will deepen.

3. Place a piece of white paper under a clear acrylic block. To achieve
a watercolor look, apply ink onto the block as shown. It will stay wet
for quite a while as Memento Dew Drop pads are pigment inks. Shown above
are the three colors I mix together (and add a little water with water
pen), to create most of my stamped face colors, a light peach.

4. Using the moist water pen, color in the face with 'peach'. Then, while
ink is still wet add a touch of watered down Rose Bud Dew Drop ink for the
cheeks. Paint in the dress with a mix of watered down Lady Bug mixed
with Tangelo and the hair with Dandelion, using Desert Sand
to add darker shadow areas.

5. Paint in the LOVE letters while you still have the same colors available,
with different shades of coral pink, peach and pink. Then use a green
Memento marker to fill in the square borders. When dry, cut out the stamped
shapes on the OUTSIDE edge of the black design lines, with
small pointed sharp scissors.

6. Secure the stamped designs to the background insert with a permanent
glue stick and press out any bubbles. Look for any glue around the image and
wipe away. Let glue dry completely before inserting into iphone case.

Special Techniques for Different Inserts

~This Christmas insert uses three different stamps, the background
is "Music background", the main image is "Silent night" and the JOY word
is from "Christmas express". The Silent night bottom left corner stamp on
sheet is stamped white cardstock that is torn around the edges. Make sure
to position a a blank space between the staff lines for the word
JOY when tracing the insert.

~To place the pets, ornaments and star in front of the tree on the
third Christmas insert, you need to create 'mask' shapes of these items.
Stamp them with Onyx Versafine ink on scrap white cardstock, then cut them
out and adhere them with a repositional temporary glue stick to the
Summer Fun Med. color insert (or white cardstock insert-see "B" photo),
before stamping the tree. Remove mask shapes AFTER stamping the tree. Stamp
the pets, ornaments and star and color in with Memento markers. The last
two photos show I it is best to stamp designs onto white cardstock instead
of a color-even it's a light yellow as the marker colors change and
deepen. I liked Insert B much better-done on white, cut out and pasted
onto insert yellow layer! The images show up well. (Save those mask
shapes in your rubber stamp package as they are reusable!)

~Wait to punch the top corner holes of the Teacher's Pet and Winter
inserts. These had smaller paper panels glued to the base insert panel,
before the stamped girls were added, using a permanent glue stick. When
the paper layers are secure and dry, trace and punch the top corner hole.

~Wait to punch the top corner holes util the end of making the Spring
insert. The Spring Meadows Light cardstock color was textured with the
top pointed half of the New Sprout Dew Drop ink pad by tapping lightly onto
the cardstock. Vein lines were lightly drawn with the same color
Memento marker. The stamp used is Letters & flowers stamped onto the
cardstock with Cottage Ivy. All corners were rounded and the top stamped
layer was then adhered to a Spring Meadows Med. cardstock insert. The flowers
are filled in with a violet Memento marker. When the paper layers are secure
and dry, trace and punch the top corner hole.

~On the red, Bonjour! travel girl background printed paper is a stamped image
of the rose from the "Love assortment" clear stamp set, using Onyx Black
ink before the girl was adhered permanently.

~The Fall Summer Fun Light Mix & Match cardstock insert was first shadowed
with a Desert Sand Dew Drop ink pad, then just the edges of the cardstock
were darkened with Rich Cocoa. Then I used the side edge of the Dew
Drop Potter's Clay ink pad to add texture over the entire insert. I
tapped it to create moon shaped lines fairly close together. The
"Delicate flowers" stamp was applied with Onyx Black, embossed and then
the flowers were colored in with the Memento markers shown
in the last photo.

~A photo iphone insert is a great way to show off your loved ones. Round corners
on the Printed Madison paper, the cardstock and the inkjet printed photo.
Apply Bahama Blue Memento ink with a small rounded sponge dauber to the
printed paper. Use the actual Danube Blue Dew Drop ink pad directly on
the edges of the paper insert, cardstock mat and photo.

One More Papercrafting Idea

You can purchase clear acrylic or plastic light switch cover plates, in
hardware stores. These are usually made for a piece of wallpaper to
be inserted to match your wall. They also make great covers for our
changeable rubber stamped designs. Just trace the cover and holes on the
back of your art and create just as you do iphone inserts. My wall plate
came with a dense foam insert which helps press the paper against the cover.
Try not to tighten the screws to much or you may crack the switch plate
cover. Be creative and have fun!
