Clay Veneer Instructions
1. Condition your clay (I use my scrap clay, or any color of clay desired)
by slicing off pancake thickness pieces, passing them through the clay
conditioner machine 8-10 times, each time folding it in half. Place
the FOLD into the machine first to avoid air bubbles. You will use a total
of 1/2 cube for each cover. When soft and pliable, pass the clay through the
machine at the thickest setting, then gradually turn the dial number to
the next thickest setting, then once again to the next thickest setting (#3
on the Clay Conditioner) and you should have an approximate
1/16" thick sheet of clay.
2. Mist the textured side of the Texture Maker sheet with water, place the
clay sheet over the desired pattern and gently press the bottom edge
only of the clay in place, to secure it. Place the backside (flat) of the
texture sheet facing you and pass both the clay and the texture sheet
slowly through at the thickest clay machine setting.

~Red with black details: Edgy mini textures use city map and river rocks
~White with red, orange & yellow Detail lines: Alternate
the two fancy Technique Design Blocks from set
3. Separate the clay from the texture sheet and secure it to a ceramic tile,
well enough that the clay will not move while cutting. Set the clear iphone
case over the design area you like. Holding it in place, use a stiff
Sculpey slicer blade to cut the top, bottom and sides of the case and
remove excess clay. Leave the case in place.
4. Using an Ex-Acto craft blade knife (or similar), cut out the camera
hole placement, allowing the blade to rest on the case hole edge. Now
remove the case, and cut a little off of each corner to round them with
the craft blade. Remove all excess clay.
5. If you want to add crystal stones to the cover, press them into the
clay now, where desired, (BEFORE baking), but then REMOVE them before the
clay goes in the oven. The crystals can take the heat, but you do not want
them in the clay YET, as you'll be covering the clay with ink after baking.
6. Bake the clay in a pre-heated oven at the brand's recommended length for
this thickness, at the recommended temperature. Remove from oven, place
tile on a potholder (leave the clay secured in place until instructed), and
right away apply a coat of Pledge Future floor finish with a flat brush.
The heat will allow the liquid to soak into the clay. Allow the clay to cool.
Note: The reason I glaze the clay before applying the inks, is so that
when the first layer of ink is applied to the indented design lines, the
glaze allows easy removal of the unwanted ink on the "raised" areas of
the clay. It also aids in preventing discoloration of the raised clay areas.
The glaze acts as a barrier so you can easily remove the ink where desired.
Inking The Clay Details
Adding Color to Projects
1. With the clay still secured to the tile, dab a large stencil brush onto
an ink pad until the brush tip is saturated with ink, and using a pouncing
motion apply ink into all the texture indentations.
2. Dry the ink with a heat tool for 2 full minutes, keeping the tool nozzle
at least 3" away form the clay. The samples above show black or purple
details, although other colors are used for design details
and are listed after step 3 below.
2. Using a water moistened (not dripping wet) wet/dry piece of 400 grit
sand paper, sand away the ink on the raised areas of the clay surface only.
Wipe away residue with a paper towel and heat the clay just until it dries.
3. The clay design will now show up clearly. (If you like this look, you
can stop here, glue in the crystal and apply a coat of floor finish.) Apply
your second ink color (or colors if using a tri-color ink pad) by pouncing
it gently onto the raised areas of the design until they are "opaque"
or solid in color (refer to: "Using a Tri-Color Ink Pad" below). For the
Multi-Color Blend, apply your third color overlapping the other colors.
(For more specific instructions on applying more than one surface ink
color, see "Inking Instructions for Multi-Color Veneers" below.)
Below are two photos of a sample project that was glazed, stenciled with three colors,
sanded and glazed. The iphone case on the right uses my main technique,
it is glazed, stenciled, sanded, another layer of stamp pad color is
added and then it is glazed. All but one project (shown in the left photo)
from today's demo is created in this manner. Ink pad colors and the crystal
rhinestones added on each case is listed below. Refer to the
textured cases above as well.
~Multi-Color Blend: (1 flat back 7mm Crystal Aurora Boreales crystal)
Sunflower Yellow, Rocket Red, Mediterranean Blue ink pad
~Blue-Green Blend: (3 pointback 5mm Blue Zircon and 2 pointback
5mm Peridot crystals) Tri-Color "Peacock" ink pad
~Lime with Blue Details: (5 pointback 5mm Sapphire crystals)
Pearlescent Sky Blue ink pad
~Blue with Violet Details: (5 pointback 5mm Amethyst crystals)
Pearlescent Purple ink pad
~Pink-Violet Blend: (7 pointback Crystal Aurora Boreales crystals)
Tri-Color "Twilight"
~Silver/Gold/Copper Blend: (5 pointback 5mm Pacific Opal crystals)
Tri-Color "Mineral" inbk pad
~Black and Red: (5 pointback 5mm Siam crystals) Rocket Red ink pad
~Red, Orange & Yellow: Rocket Red, Sunflower Yellow
4. Place the clay back into the oven (to heat set the ink and make them
permanent) at the same recommended temperature, for 10 minutes.
Remove from the oven and allow the clay to cool.
5. Secure the crystal stones in place using G-S Hypo Cement and
let the glue dry for an hour. Apply one last coat of floor finish and let
dry naturally. Brush right over the crystals as it helps keep them
secure and does not effect the shine at all.
Inking Instructions for Multi-Color Veneers
Multi-Color Blended Case
This case uses Pearlescent Graphite Black stenciled detail lines, and
three primary colors. Apply Pearlescent Sunflower Yellow randomly to a
white or light clay colored iphone veneer. Next add Pearlescent Sky
Blue, overlapping the yellow ink in a few areas to create green. Finally
add some Pearlescent Rocket Red overlapping
the yellow areas for
orange, and overlapping the blue areas for violet.
Tri-Color Stamp Pad Blends
1. Create a clay veneer then stencil detail ink lines as directed above.
Heat set the stencil lines and allow the clay to cool.
2. Add a three-color blend by gently pouncing a stamp pad onto the raised
surface only (do not press too hard) of the texture design, positioning
one ink color end just beyond the top edge of the clay veneer. Flip the
ink pad over and stamp the bottom half overlapping the center color.
