Understanding Navicular Disease.

Navicular disease, also known as Caudal Heel Syndrome, is an inflammatory equine condition much misunderstood by many horse people. Often confused with laminitis, navicular is characterized by an inflammation of the distal sesamoid bone in the horse’s foot. This painful condition is usually caused by injury or poor conformation, but may also be associated with hormonal or nutritional imbalances. There are a wide variety of ‘definitions’ of navicular disease, ranging from arthrosis of the navicular bone and deep flexor tendon, inflammation of the navicular bone and bursa, inflammation of tendons and cartilage which leads to inflammation of the navicular bone, inflammation of the coffin joint. The seeming disagreement among the experts is simply an illustration of the complexity of this painful condition.

Herbal Treatments for Navicular Disease.

As there is no cure for navicular disease, options from the herbal arsenal are predominantly those herbs that can alleviate the pain associated with the condition, and improve circulation to the distal limbs. Herbs that have scientifically demonstrated anti-inflammatory activity include Devil’s Claw (Harpagophytum procumbens), comfrey (Symphytum officinale), coltsfoot (Tussilago farfara), and Calendula (Calendula officinalis). Herbs used to stimulate the circulatory system include Buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum), Hawthorn (Crataegus oxyacantha), Horehound (Hypericum perforatum) and Stinging Nettle (Urtica dioica).
