June Lilly is a young slave growing up near Richmond, Virginia. Her Massa, Jeb Henson is very kind to all his slaves. Other slave owners say he is two softhearted to whip his slaves. June Lilly's dad died when she was born of a snake bite. June Lilly has a mom called Mammy Sally, who is very wise and kind. Then one day, a man came from the deep South buying slaves. June Lilly got picked to leave her Mammy Sally because she had good bone structure and was tall. Down in the deep South , June Lilly met Liza. Liza's legs were all scared and her back was humped over. But, even though she was crippled, June Lilly was her friend. June Lilly and Liza work up the courage to travel on the Underground Railroad to Canada. On the way, they have many adventures and meet many kind people that are helping them get to Canada. I think June Lilly is very brave, adventurous, and outgoing. Though, she is scared of whips, rushing water, and Sims she would face anything to get to Canada.
