Another Win For The Wildcats.

The Wildcats, last night, added another win to their season total. The Wildcats beat West Sydney Razorbacks 118-113. The Wildcats showed much better form last night than in previous games, opening the scoring with the first 4 points, and never losing the lead all game. At quarter time the Wildcats were up by 3 points, 32-29. By the half they had improved their lead to 6 points, 61-55. An excellent third quarter saw the Wildcats go into the fourth 14 points up (92-78), however in the fourth quarter fatigue was evident and West Sydney outscored the Wildcats for the quarter by 9 points, however it was not enough to win West Sydney the game.

Rashad Tucker was the Wildcats MVP last night. Rashad had a triple double (20 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists) as well as 3 steals. Ricky Grace improved his form dramatically last night, dominating on court, scoring 20 points, 6 rebounds, 2 steals, 9 assists and only 3 turnovers. Mathew Burston top scored for the Wildcats with 21 points, 12 rebounds, 1 assist and 3 steals. James Harvey (who won the coach’s award for last nights game) scored 19 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 steals. Tony Ronaldson, who started out very slow, finished the game with 18 points, however he only had 1 rebound and 4 turnovers.

Former Wildcats player, Aaron Trahair, top scored for West Sydney with 22 points and 5 rebounds, folowed by Sam Mackinnon who also had a triple double with 21 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists. It is the first time in the NBL that there has been 2 triple doubles in the same game.

Wildcats Tame Taipans Fierce Bite.

The Wildcats pulled off a 4 point win at the Jungle last night in a scrappy but nail bitting game. Tempers were flaring early in the game, when only a few minutes into the game, Anthony Stewart was called for an unsportsmanlike foul, and James Harvey called for a technical foul after turning around and throwing the ball back at Stewart.

For much of the first quarter scores were close but by the first break Cairns were up by 12 points, 35-23. The Cats came out in the second and continued their scrappy form of the first, letting the lead go out to 18 points, but they soon picked up the pace, outscoring Cairns for the quarter (27-15) to tie scores at the half at 50 a piece.

In the third quarter played slow and scrappy again, allowing Cairns to race ahead to a 10-point lead at the final break, bringing the scores to 80-70. The Wildcats played better in the fourth quarter, slowly eroding the deficit. They had brought the difference back to 2 points with four minutes left in the game when things started turning the Cats way. Stewart fouled Harvey while he was attempting a 3 point shot and Harvey received three foul shots. Stewart immediately complained about the call and a technical foul was also called on him, giving the Cats another foul shot and possession of the ball. The Cairns coach started to complain about the foul calls on Stewart and a technical foul was called on him as well giving the Cats another 2 foul shots. Harvey attempted all 6 fouls shots and made 5 of the, putting the Cats up by 3 points. But despite all this, the Wildcats couldn’t hold it together enough to sustain the lead, allowing Cairns to go up again.

However in the last minute of the game, Matthew Burston got a shot in under the basket, putting the Cats up by 1 point. Cairns attempted a shot but couldn’t make it count, Matthew Burston recovered the ball with 17 seconds left on the clock, and passed it on to Ricky Grace who called a timeout with 12 seconds to go. This was immediately followed by a time out to Cairns. When the game resumed the Cats brought the ball up and Tucker was fouled at the half way line, giving him another 2 free throw attempts. He made only 1 of them, putting the Cats up by 2. Cairns the regained possession of the ball and attempted a three point shot, nut could not make it count. Tucker grabbed the rebound for the cats with only seconds left and took the ball down court. Stewart received another unsportsmanlike foul with 1 second left on the clock, this time against Tucker. This gave Tucker another two free throw attempts and the Wildcats possession of the ball. Tucker made both shots, putting the Cats up by 4 and finishing the game at 101-97.

Tucker played well for the Cats scoring 23 points at 64% and pulling down 7 boards and 6 assists. Harvey had another good game scoring 23 points at 55%, 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals. Tony Ronaldson, who played his 450th NBL game last night, had a quiet night, scoring only 11 points at 44%, 6 rebounds and 2 assists. Liam Rush and Andrew Latimer did not play.

Cairns’ best last night was the 2 former Wildcats players, Anthony Stewart and Marcus Timmons. Stewart scored 21 points at 44% with 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals. Timmons scored 20 points at 41% with 10 rebounds, 7 assists and 1 steal.

Rawlings realeased by Cats.

Today the Wildcats announced the release of import, Reed Rawlings, after just 2 games. The Wildcats stated that Rawlings doesn't fit the role they require. All the best in your future Reed. You did a great job for the Cats in your short time here.

Tigers beat Cats at the Jungle.

Tonight the Wildcats lost their second game of the season. The Cats started strong, going on a 9 point unanswered run, after allowing the Tigers the first 4 points of the game and held the lead for most of the first quater, with scores being tied at the first break. During the 2nd, the Cats couldn't seem to make their shots drop and the Tigers stormed to a 10 point point lead at half time. The Wildcats played better again in the 3rd tying the quater at 32 points a piece, however the Tigers were just too good outscoring the Cats in the 4th to win 116 to 99.

Mark Bradtke, Lanard Copeland and Andrew Gaze all had good games for the Tigers and showed why they are greats of the game. Bradkte scored 23 points and had 10 rebounds while Copeland scored 33 and Gaze scored 24 and had 6 boards.

James Harvey came away with the Wildcats MVP for the game scoring 21 points with 6 rebounds, 6 assists and 1 steal. Tony Ronaldson also had another strong game, winning the coaches award for the game and top scoring with 23 points, 8 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 blocked shot, 1 steal and no turnovers or fouls.

Ricky Grace picked up his offence tonight scoring 16 points and 6 assists however his defence still left a lot to be desired, with him looking like he didn't care about it for most of the game.

The Wildcats played a lot better tonight than they did against Sydney however they still have a lot of work to do and a lot of improving to do. Good luck guys.

Go the Cats!

Wildcats first game disappointment to Kings.

The Wildcats have opened their 2003/2004 season campaign with a 19 point loss to Sydney, at home, in front of a near sell out crowd. Sydney held the lead for the entire game and showed why they are the favourites to win the championship this year.

The Wildcats are showing some promising signs for the season, however the lack of preseason team preparation was definately evident.

Tony Ronaldson was the star for the Cats last night, top scoring with 23 points and pulling down 10 boards. The two new imports, John Jackson and Reed Rawlings both had solid games with Jackson scoring 14 points and 9 rebounds and Rawlings scoring 15 points and 4 rebounds, however they did look a little lost on court, but that should hopefully come with time.

Matt Burston also played a fairly solid game, having been unable to train for much of the preseason due to a knee injury. Burston played 26 minutes in the game on a sore knee and still managed to score 15 points with 10 rebounds and 2 blocks.

Ricky Grace was the one who probably shocked a few people. He had a very quite game, scoring only 3 points (a field goal and a free throw) at only 17%. While he did have 13 assists and a block he also had 7 turnovers and really seemed to struggle on court.

Given time to gel together and get into a routine, the Cats could be a very influential team in the NBL and will hopefully have another successful season.
