NJRC's Webmaster Wrote... Organized by
the Singapore Science Centre, sponsored by MOE
and A*STAR annually, the NJRC has grown, since
its inception in 1999, from 167 teams to more
than 700 teams participating last year. The
overwhelming feedback and anticipation from the
schools have truly encouraged us to make the NJRC
2003 a bigger and better event, this year!
The NJRC is all about problem-solving skills,
through the creativity thinking and
independent-learning of students. The competition
uses the LEGO MINDSTORMS Robotics kit and
students take on the challenge of forming a team
to work together on
(1) assembling a robot;
(2) programming the robot;
(3) designing a web page;
(4) conducting research;
(5) building team spirit and, espirit de corp;
and
(6) out-perform the other robots.
Ultimately, the teams will present their entire
learning process in the form of a team Journal.
The top prize, the Championship Award, will be
presented to the team with the best Journal.
More importantly, the NJRC will be an excellent
opportunity for students to interact with their
peers, teachers and judges, who are from tertiary
institutions and various industries during the
course of the competition. The NJRC is about
celebrating the process of learning through
interactive, meaningful experiences.
|
The NJRC is open to 2 categories of
students :
(i) Upper Primary (Primary 4 to Primary 6)
(ii) Lower Secondary (Secondary 1 and Secondary
2)
Teams of not more than 5 students will perform a
variety of challenging tasks and work together in
order to fulfil the mission of the competition.
Teams will be mentored by a teacher or parent.
Their funds could be raised from the community
around them. The technology know-how and
entrepreneurial skills can be imparted or learned
from industry partners. However, the students
will be the programmer and researcher working on
the project, NOT the parents, teachers or tutors.
It is a students' event, with the support from
the schools and community.
Various awards will be presented to outstanding
teams in the various aspects of the competition.
The Best Performance Robot at the Finals will be
competing with teams in the Robotics Olympiad in
Seoul, Korea, this year. The highest honour will
be the Championship Award, where the winning team
will be selected based on the best Journal
submission, illustrating their Overall Learning
Experience. The winners of the coveted
Championship Award will win a once-in-a-lifetime
trip to visit the world's top Science Centres
(such as the Exploratorium, USA) and theme parks,
such as Universal Studios, Disneyland and
Legoland, USA.
If your school did not take part in NJRC
previously, we would strongly urge you to
participate this year. If you have taken part
before, we encourage your greater participation
by sending in more teams!

We look forward to your participation in
this year's exciting and challenging NJRC!
