End of Evangelion Review

Neon Genesis Evangelion was a hugely popular anime that was created in the mid-nineties by a man called Hideaki Anno, this series was produced by a company called Gainax. This company was notorious for running out of money before they could complete a whole series of episodes, and Eva was no exception. As a result, the last two episodes of NGE were very low budget and difficult to comprehend and the studio could not afford the huge action scenes originally planned. This ending angered the fans of NGE so much that some even went so far as to send Anno death threats. Understandably, Anno did not want this so he set about creating an Eva movie that used the original script from the last two episodes. Recently, this movie was released on DVD. This movie was called 'The End of Evangelion'

The first thing I have to say about EoE is that it has some very weird features, e.g. The credits appear halfway through the film instead of at the end. Also, the film begins in a comprehensible (if slightly disturbing) fashion, only to later change into a mess of hallucinations and fantasies that's even more complex than the original two episodes that caused the film to be made in the first place.

Animation:

The quality of the animation throughout the film is exquisite. In my opinion, it hasn't even been surpassed by the recent Disney attempts. (Which were made using computer animation whereas EoE is all Cell animation)

9/10

Sound:

The sound quality on my DVD is amazing. (Despite a rather dodgy English dub) With 5.1 surround sound and a sound track composed of mainly classical music it really is one of the best sound tracks of a film I've ever heard, Anime or otherwise.

10/10

Plot:

The plot is absolutely amazing. However, it is never really explained in the film and I only understand it due to several hours research on the internet. I highly recommend finding out everything you can about the plot and then watching the film again. Unfortunately, it is this kind of thing that prevents anime from becoming mainstream.

7/10

Interest:

The plot and characters will keep hardcore anime fans watching whereas the incredible action sequences and giant fighting robots will keep the lay viewer happy. But it does become very odd towards the end.

8/10

Overall:

One of the best films I've ever seen, including live action. Buy the DVD now and watch this film. Who knows, you might even enjoy it. The only reason it doesn't get a 10 is because the second half will drive away many people who may have enjoyed it otherwise.
