THE PURPOSE OF A BIBLIOGRAPHY, OR A

"WORKS CITED LIST"

(A LIST OF WORKS CONSULTED):
When you write a research paper, you must list exactly where you found your information, opinions, and facts. You have to be fair; you are giving credit to the other writers whose work you used. If you don’t, you are guilty of plagiarism, a form of academic cheating. A second reason is so your readers can read more about your topic by checking into the sources you used. This is especially important when searching the internet, as sites frequently disappear. That’s why you need the date YOU visited the site; there are archives to prove that the site really did exist.

BIBLIOGRAPHIC FORMAT:

  • List your sources alphabetically by the first word, whether it is the author or title.
  • Do NOT number your sources.
  • Indent the second line of each entry 5 spaces.

INTERNET CITATIONS

Internet citations are not very consistent. Basically, you need the title of your article, the website, the URL (which is the web address: www….) and the date you went online. Sometimes the website name is also part of the URL, i.e. abcnews.com is the website name; www.abcnews.go.com is the URL or web address. If there is an author’s name given, include it (last name first); if a date for the actual article is given, include that as well. For the URL, you only type up to the first slash (/) in between these symbols < >. <www.hsa.brown.edu>

Author’s name. (if given--last name first) "Title."(in quotation marks) Name of larger
body of work. (underlined) Original publication date (if given).
      <www….>(Date you accessed the website).

If the name of the author is NOT given:
"Gore to Focus on Targeted Tax Cuts." Campaign 2000. 21 August 2000. lt;www.usatoday.com>(2 October 2000).
