Intramurals is an occasion commonly practiced in all educational institution. All members of the academe eagerly anticipate
this event for it showcases the prowess of students in sports and cultural aspects. Here, students voluntarily participate,
practice and develop as a team to win in friendly competition. MPC, as one such academic institution, has given birth to
RIWARIW 2003 as its name for this year's intramurals.
RIWARIW, a small and beautiful bird that is living in the forest, mirrors the ideals of MPC,
which is always aspiring high for growth and development. In line with the school's new mission and vision, which aims for
academic excellence and quality training, RIWARIW 2003 is just appropraite. This is so, because it is a novel act towards the
development of students through sports and cultural skills. Moreover, it gives much value to the ethnicity of the Filipinos
indigenous culture. Specifically, it focuses on the following objectives:
With the collaboration of the officials of RIWARIW 2003, a set of general
rules were formulated that would ensure fairness in judging and elucidate the limitations to all participants. These rules will
encompass all the events, which covers cultural, sports and other events. First, the sports events, include: Basketball, Volleyball,
Sepak Takraw, Single and Double Table Tennis, Single and Double Darts, Single and Double Badminton, Chess, Word Factory, Turubigan
and Sungka. Second, cultural events include: Vocal Solo, Vocal Duet, Doble Kara, Awit Riwariw, Bikol Extempo, Oration, Sabayang
Pagbigkas, Dance Sports, Riwariw Dance and Ethnic Dance. And lastly, the other events include Mr & Ms Intrams and Cheering Squad
Competition.
To assess winning scores, a point system was
devised with different kinds of awards and prizes at stake. Trophies, plaques, medals and cash await the deserving victors.
In anticipation for the upcoming RIWARIW 2003,
the MPC campus was already bustling with activities even before its first day: Carpentry and decorations went on with the stage
preparation; RIWARIW logo and demarcation lines for the outdoor sports were already painted on the school ground; Candidates
for Mr. & Ms. Intrams practiced their walks anf poses with the modern music played by the sound system; And students were strewn
everywere priming up for their respective events. Considering that Mid-Term examinations were just commenced, the atmosphere
was already very festive.
The first day of RIWARIW 2003 started with
the assembly of all participants in the school ground. At around 8:40 am, the motorcade finally moved in the following order:
First went the MPC's Marshall and Colors, trailed by the majorettes, in their black shorts and white shirts, and the Mariners
Band. Next were the different teams and their respective mobiles, muses and cheering squad members. The formation and presentation
of the different teams immediately followed the arrival of the parade at 9:55 am.
The opening program, started right after,
initiated by the Invocation and the playing of the National Anthem by the Mariner's Band. Mr. Jovan Galvo then enunciated the
mission and vision of the MPC and introduced RIWARIW 2003. After which, the MPC Band and Majorettes performed the exhibition
which was supposed to be presented in the forthcoming WOW Philippines to be held at Intramuros, Manila. This was followed by
the overview of the RIWARIW 2003 and the presentation of the Board of Judges:
The Gimmick show proceeded with the sole
participation of ADUANA, which was a representation of the Peņafrancia Festival. The team was fully prepared with their depiction
of the Regatta and Traslacion with matching boatmen and boat prop and an improvised replica of the image of Peņafrancia.
In behalf of Capt. Dante La. Jimenez, Dr.
Marilissa J. Ampuan, the Executive Vice President, delivered the President's Message. She gave emphasis on "clean living" the
essence of Intramurals. That is, it gives the youth a diversion from vices that are detrimental to health and development.
Torch lighting, hoisting of flags, oath of
sportsmanship and releasing of balloons, ensued right after and was ended by drawing of lots.
At approximately 10:45 am, the third part
of the morning's activities immediately commenced. The Mr & Ms Intrams and the cheering squad competition comprised this part
of the program. The event ended at 11:30 am after the announcement of winners.
In the afternoon, the activities resumed
with the competition for indoor sports. The scheduled outdoor sports were cancelled and rescheduled the following morning due
to heavy rains.
Simultaneous with the Intramurals first day
of goings-on, 101.5 FM's Campus Tour covered all events which was a live remote broadcast.
The first part of the day's events, from
7:00 am to 5:30 pm, involved indoor and outdoor sports.
SAYAWITAN 2003, the Literary, Musical and
Dance competition, which was the highlight of the day's activities, started at 5:30 pm. Initiating the program was an opening
number, which was a dance in the tune of "Shine On Me". Flag ceremony followed after, and Mr. Jovan Galvo conveyed the opening
remarks and honor rules. Subsequent to this, the recognition for Special and Academic awards for the 2nd Semester of S/Y 2002,
were given to deserving students.
Prior to the contest proper, Mr. Sotero
Frondozo expressed the event's overview as the Committee Chairman and Mrs. Christine Eusebio, introduced the Board of Judges.
Contest Proper 1 began with the announcement
that 20 seconds was the only alloted time for each participant to appear for their respective events, otherwise, they will be
deemed losing by default. Due to this, no participant for the Vocal Solo showed up. The program was then moved to the Vocal Duet
Competiton, in which the HOTELIERS had no contestant. English Oration, Bikol Extempo and finally, the RIWARIW dance followed
after and ended the 1st Category.
Contest proper 2 then immediately followed
with the Ethnic Dance as the first number. Dance Sports (MTV had no participant), Awit Riwariw, Doble Kara and Sabayang Pagbigkas
completed the 2nd category. The program closed just before 9:00 pm right after the acknowledgment and awarding of prizes.
In addition to the cultural event, the number
of viewers in attendance was big enough which was initially few during the first parts of the program.
The third and the last day of RIWARIW 2003
was the last of the indoor and outdoor sports, which happened from 7:00 am until 5:30 pm.
Like any other, beauty pageant, the search
for Mr. & Ms. Intrams, consists of the candidates' ramp walk, sports attire and question and answer portion. With wit and simplicity,
garnering 60 points each, the winners both came from the ADUANA/BSCA team. Both had outstanding answers to the questions posed
to them and with their donning of simple sports apparel, they also both bagged the best in sports wear.
Team A and B both had 2 set of participants
while Team B had only set of participants, hence, they only got a score of 50 pts.
A group of 4-5 members and relying heavily
on audience impact, the contestants must be able to effectively impersonate the original performers of a very popular song. Although
all teams have done quite well, the ADUANA team came out as the winners because of their very funny impersonation of the song
"Mr. Suave" by Parokya ni Edgar.
The official results are as follows:
This is as oratorical competition with an
on-the-spot composition of piece. The theme is given only before the contestant is due to deliver his piece, in bicol. All participants
had a difficulty in delivering in pure bicol and inevitably employed English words. ADUANA, with his conversational but funny
style of delivery, triumphed over the others. The official results are as follows:
Here, the topic is assigned prior to the
competition schedule. "The Role of the Family in Sports Development", was the given topic. Delivered in English, the score would
rely heavily on the content of their composed piece and how it was delivered. ADUANA won the 1st place. The official results
are as follows:
A number of participants must be able to
deliver harmoniously the peice assigned to them. Employing choreography and costume ingenuity, all teams must have spent a great
time preparing for this event. With very good timing and harmony of delivery, the MTV team obviously had the advantage and occupied
the most coveted place. The official results are as follows:
This event is limited to a maximum of 25
members, which involves a match of cheering and dance exhibition. Heavily participated by the different teams, the cheerers
demonstrated so much effort as exemplified by their professional-looking stunts and striking attires. The use of motorcycles
and even van were employed as part of their opening strategies. This, in turn, caused the HOTELIERS team their disadvantage.
Because of their recruiting an outsider as the driver of the van, which is a violation, they landed only the third place. ADUANA
consequently, got the first place and MTV placed 2nd. The official results are as follows:
This is a rendition of a five-minute Original
Pilipino Music, which is the very first event in the SAYAWITAN portion. Eventually, no one was able to participate in this event
after an alloted 20-second waiting period for the participant's appearance.
This has the same requirements as that of
vocal solo and the difference is self-explanatory. MTV, gathering 20 points, obtained the first place with their interpretation
of "Ikaw Lamang". ADUANA, placed next with a score 15 points. Hoteliers were not able to participate.
The participant here must be able to sing
the voice of both the male and female parts. Donned in half-male and half-female attire, the MTV contender emerged as the winner
for effectively singing both voices and with so much audience impact, also because of his good singing voice. The official results
are as follows:
Basically, like ballroom dancing in the tune
of Latin and Standard Modern sound, this relies on heavily on mastery of dance steps and interpretation and choreography. Hoteliers,
gaining 15 points, got hold of the first place and was seconded by Aduana, having 20 points. The MTV team had no participants.
This is like any other modern dance except
for the Filipino flair. MTV emerged as the winner for their simple and original choreography. The others would have performed
better but they employed the service of professional dancers, which was foul. The official results are as follows:
Here, the costume and choreography must precisely
represent the Filipino culture. The ADUANA team won this event because of their enormous display of stunts and props. Depicting
tribal hunting practices, a real Boa was used and so is fire eating. Lighted torches and standing on bamboo poles securely got
them the first place. The official results are as follows:
A few new games were incorporated into this
event specially those that fall under "Larong Lahi" because of the ethnic emphasis of this year's Intramurals. The other athletic
events is no longer given a description for its' mechanics are already popular.
This is a "larong lahi" played on two sides
divided by a horizontal line drawn on the middle of the ground. An "IT" tries to tag a player who tries to go to the other side
of the line.
Players who played their best are as follows:
| Men's Basketball | Women's Basketball |
| MVP - Michel Tible (MTV) | MVP - Katherine River (HRM) |
| Mythical Five | Mythical Five |
| 1. Julius Sanchez (MTV) | 1. Crystal Hebreo (Hoteliers) |
| 2. Giovani Laureles (MTV) | 2. Maria Lejani Dolor (Hoteliers) |
| 3. Elmo Borras (MTV) | 3. Beatriz Orbeso (ADUANA) |
| 4. Elijeo Mirasol (Hoteliers) | 4. Romina Cambaliza (MTV) |
| 5. Roman Lucero (MTV) | 5. Dianne Blessie Ajero (ADUANA) |
| Volleyball | |
| Best Player - Jesssa Chavez |
The winners for each event were all announced
right after the competition was done. But the over-all winners for all events were announced on September 1, 2003, the first
Monday after RIWARIW 2003.
Team C/ADUANA, reaping 967 points, took
the championship for the athletic events, while Team B/MTV got the cultural title with the total score of 324 points.
