OTHER STAFFS
THE PRIVATE
& THE PUBLIC

Some things should be done in the privacy of your room, or at the very least, the restroom. But you spot people transgressing all too frequently. Here are the few pet peeves.

  • The only cosmetic you can retouch in public is pressed powder and lipstick (expect lip-lining). Plucking your eyebrows, applying eye-liner, and replenishing mascara should be done in the restroom.

  • Never brush your hair at the table. Period.

  • Never clip your fingernails or worse, your toenails in public.

  • Picking your nose is obviously a private matter, but we've spotted too many people doing it public for our own comfort.

  • Stretching at the table in a public restaurant is a no-no. While it might be comfortable, it isn't attractive to look at.
THE ART OF
ECHOING

Rather than remain silent as others talk, successful people parrot what they hear, according to one author of a book about speaking and listening effectively. Echoing helps avoid misunderstanding by allowing you to make sure you've correctly interpreted the speaker's message. If not, can clarify or correct. To repeat skillfully:

PARAPHRASE. "So you're saying, the tuition of this school year has been increased by five percent, right?

     REFLECT EMOTIONS. "You sound frustrated."

SUMMARIZE. "OK it's settled. Prepare the conference room for tomorrow at 2:00 PM. I'll send the memo to all concerned."

Employing this conversational technique, is playing verbal ping-pong... and you win this match.
