20/5/03                              Clearout as Robertson releases seven

According to a report in the Press & Journal, David Robertson has released seven players from Elgin City. The Black and Whites manager has told Connor Campbell, Mike Sanderson, Ryan McMullan, Chris Love, Steve Rattray, Richard James and Graeme Grant they won't be offered new contracts. Steven MacDonald and David Ross, who haven't featured under Robertson due to injury, have been invited back to Borough Briggs for pre-season training before a decision is made. Robertson has re-signed Kevin Steele, David Hind, Andy Smith, Simon Allan and John Gallacher. In addition, Peter Hamilton and Fraser Bremner have agreed to sign contracts once they finish school in the summer. Club captain Craig Tully, goalkeeper Martin Pirie and defender David Mackay have all been offered new deals and Robertson is confident all three will stay. Robertson believes his decision to release so many players will have come as no surprise, given the club's disappointing ninth-place finish this season. He said: "It's never easy telling players they won't be staying, but it had to be done. I said when I came to the club I would give the players the chance to prove they wanted to stay here. Some have risen to the challenge, and some have not. "It's been a disappointing season for everyone associated with the club and I feel we need to freshen things up a bit as the atmosphere at the club was becoming a bit stale. I've always maintained we have the nucleus of a side here which is reflected in the number of players who have signed again or been made offers. "Hopefully, David Ross and Steven MacDonald will show they want to be part of my plans in pre-season which is why I've asked them back. I haven't had the chance to see them train due to injury. I'll keep in touch with both players during the summer and, hopefully, they will want to come back here and show me what they can do." Report by Paul Third of the P & J.
