Fetal Alcohol Syndrome
Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is the most preventable form of mental retardation. It is defined by as "a variable cluster of birth defects that may include facial abnormalities, growth deficiency, and other impairments, caused by the mother's consumption of alcohol during pregnancy." According to the CDC,"If a woman drinks alcohol during her pregnancy, her baby can be born with FAS, a lifelong condition that causes physical and mental disabilities."
Women participating in risk behaviors such as having unprotected sex should not consume alcohol while participating in said behaviors, for it increases the risks of the alcohol reaching the embryo in its earliest stages.
Contrary to popular belief, there are many signs and symptoms associated with this disorder. From microcephaly, to physical abnormalities, even learning disabilities.
The most extreme consequence of FAS is mental retardation. However there are many cases of facial deformities, heart defects, hyperactivity, slow growth, and many other health and learning issues.
