Located at a busy intersection in the bustling Lakeview neighborhood, ours is an active campus. Our parish’s rich history has laid the groundwork for a thriving community made up of many young adults new to the area, as well as many others who can trace their roots here back several generations. The beautiful Gothic church, whose cornerstone was laid in 1889, is home to the only weekly Sunday German Mass in the Archdiocese of Chicago. The diversity of our parish is also evidenced at our weekly Spanish Mass, as well as at our English Masses, featuring a more traditional choral liturgy at 10:30 am and a contemporary liturgy geared to young adults at 5:00 pm. In addition to vibrant yet reverent worship, people come here to learn about the Catholic faith, to experience a sense of Christian community, and to engage in service and outreach.
Our many ministries, groups and organizations provide numerous ways to enter more deeply into parish life and to serve as outlets for further developing faith and spirituality.
Our school, Alphonsus Academy and Center for the Arts, is a flourishing Catholic “magnet school,” drawing students from all parts of the Chicagoland area seeking an enhanced arts curriculum integrated into a first rate academic program.
The St. Alphonsus campus is the home of numerous arts organizations housed in the Athenaeum Theater and the Center for the Arts in the school building. We are also proud to be associated with Marah’s (a division of Deborah’s Place, housing formerly homeless women in the old convent), and the Lakeview Pantry, which provides emergency food distribution to the area’s needy.
