1836An Introduction to Revenue Stamps Dagnall, Harry G.B. J., Jan/Feb. 1994, 32, (1), 6 This introductory article to British revenue stamps includes a reference to Henry Bessemer thought by some to be the inventor of Perfins. In 1832 he suggested to the Board of Stamps that revenue stamps should be perforated rather than being embossed as this would make their misuse very difficult. The idea was not adopted as a subsequent idea made by Bessemers fiancée of introducing date plugs was felt to be superior. (Complete)

The pricing of these stamps is reviewed. The catalogue also lists a Schermack perfin with Scott Cat. #344 with Mailometer Type 1 perforations. This entry is questioned. Also the US Postal Service regulations for perforating as published in 1993.

Perfins are known from Finland from 1897 but the Postal Administration only gave instructions on their use from 1907. Only 10 dies appearing on some 130 different values have been identified on the stamps of Finland. Each are illustrated and users are identified where known the listing being in chronological order.

This was sent to the English Sewing Cotton Co. in Manchester. They used perfins E4230.01 and E4340.01 earlier in the 20th century, and it seems may have been trying to attract them back.
