Portrait Photography and Summative Assignment
Skill One: Light
Light is very important to portrait photography, you have to know what kinds to use and how to use them.
Usually portraits are done with flash. Flash can be tricky becuase you have to aim it at the right angle. If it is direct on the subject then it tends to wash out the subject and make them look flat and harsh. So it is usually advised to angle it up, but you have to becareful with this because it can cause unwanted shadows.
If you are not using a flash then you use exsisting or artifical light, with this you have to watch where you aim them around your subject because of shadows. It is usually easier at least in this assignment to use exsisting light from a window or lamp.
Skill Two: Subject Positioning
You have to watch how you position your subject. Face on is a very bad position because it leaves the subject looking flat and ridged. Usually a 3/4 view is better. You also have to watch the hight of the camera, by aiming it up or down can reduce chubiness in the face and give many new angles for photos.
Theres also the issue of eye contact. Some photographers prefer it as it makes a connection with the viewer, other disdain from it. Its mostly up to the photographer.
Skill Three: Outdoor Summative
For our final assignment we had to take one roll of film out doors at black creek pioner village. It is a culmination of all the skills we had learned so far.
Skill Four: Indoor Summative
The same can be said for our indoor roll but we had to be sure we found interesting subject and watch for light sorces as we were not allowed to use flashes.
