PackWord

What is it?

PackWord can compress a Microsoft Word document (.doc) file into a smaller, compressed, .doc file. The compressed .doc file is self-extracting: when loaded into Microsoft Word, the compressed document will automatically expand to the original version.

What is it good for?

You could use PackWord to

bulletSave space on a laptop hard drive by compressing large documents.
bulletSend smaller files to limited-size e-mails accounts.
bulletTransport multi-megabyte documents using a 1.44 MB diskette.

What is the advantage using PackWord over WinZip?

WinZip is a great program. The benefit of PackWord is that compressed documents automatically self-expand in Microsoft Word. You can also send it to a friend or colleague even though he may not have the PackWord program. Since PackWord is freeware, you do not need to choose: use both WinZip and PackWord!

Requirements

PackWord runs on Windows 95,98,ME,NT,2000,XP. Compressed files can be opened using Microsoft Word on Windows only.

Download and Installation

Click packword.exe and save it. No further installation is required.

How to compress

Run the program packword.exe from where you saved it:

An open file dialog box appears, select the file to compress:

The file is compressed... results:

How to expand

Now you have the compressed version:

To get the original file, open the file big(compressed).doc. It will automatically self-expand to the original document.

How does PackWord work?

When compressing, PackWord compresses the .doc file and appends the compressed data to a self-extracting header, creating the new (compressed) .doc file. When decompressing, the self-extracting header expands the compressed data to the original document, opens the expanded file and closes itself.

How much does PackWord cost?

Nothing. PackWord is freeware.

Can I use PackWord from the command line?

Yes. Running PackWord with a file name argument will compress the document:

packword training.doc

Running PackWord with an extra /nosummary argument will not show the summary dialog box:

packword training.doc /nosummary
