The Smart Couple

Radio 4
1997/8?? (two programmes only?)

Traditional crime caper about Jonathan and Jackie, a tea-shop owning couple who, in accordance with the conventions of these things, become sucked into all manner of skulduggery.  The duo were played by Haydn Gwynne and James Fleet (and since Fleet was cast in type, one half of the titular couple was distinctly lacking in smartness).  The first episode, ‘Tea and Sympathy’, which was created by William Humble and was almost certainly a one-off; David Joss Buckley then took Humble’s characters and gave them a second outing, and the two programmes were repeated together in December 1998.
