4. Installing the MIDI patch set

Skip this if you do not want to use your GUS to play MIDI files.

Before installing the Windows driver, you will need a MIDI patch set. You need it as the GUS does not have any patches in ROM; the patches reside on your disk and are are loaded on the onboard RAM. It has been possible for years to download a standalone patch set, but due to licensing issues with Eye and I (the creator of the patch set), they have been removed from ftp sites. No matter how much I would have liked to give you a zip containing all the patch files to save you some trouble, I can't. You'll have to extract it from the installation disks you've downloaded before.

The install disks include the patch set, the Windows 3.1 drivers as well as some DOS and Windows 3.1 utilities. The only thing you will need is the patch set, tough. I do not recommend installing any of the other utilities as they are not useful unless you wish to play MIDIs and WAVs from DOS.

Simply download the files above, copy them on disks and run the installation program. Select restore files and input *.PAT (to extract the patch files) as shown below. You will also need to extract files DEFAULT.CFG and ULTRASOUND.INI.

Once the patch set is installed, I suggest installing an add-on patch set that enhances many of the standard patches. This can be done at a later stage.
