"Anime" (pronounced AH-NEE-MAY, but most folks say ANN-EE-MAY instead) is the Japanese word for "animation," and it's also the word fans use when referring to Japanese animation. Anime is different from our cartoons in that, unlike typical Saturday morning fodder, anime's primary audience isn't necessarily composed of kids. In fact, there's probably just as much anime geared towards older audiences as younger ones. Animation is a HUGE form of entertainment in Japan, and it's reflected in its quality and diversity. No matter what kind of stuff you like, you're bound to find it in anime. Genres include action, sports, sci-fi, fantasy, romantic comedy, horror, martial arts, drama. slapstick, superhero... well, you get the idea. If you've never seen anime before, you're in for a treat!
