Westlife was originally formed by three of the current band mates, Shane Filan, Mark Feehily, and Kian Egan. The three had worked on a production of Grease at their school, and their friends and teachers encouraged them to continue singing. The three later formed a group with three others (Derek, Graham, Michael) called 6 as 1, but later changed their name to I.O.You. The band released the single Together Girl Forever in Ireland with only limited success. It was then that Shane's mum contacted Boyzone's manager Louis Walsh to convince him to take a look at the group and consider sighning them. At first Louis was impressed, but felt that he didn't have time to manage another boy band. Luckily, for fellow fans, Louis contacted Ronan Keating, who was part of Boyzone at the time, to co-manage the group. Rolo Management was formed!

Shortly after, three members (Derek, Graham, Michael) were asked to leave the group and the band held open auditions in Dublin for new band mates. Nicky Byrne (who had recently been turned down for the Leeds football team) and Bryan McFadden were eventually chosen and Westlife was born!

Ronan had the lads change their name from I.O.You, which he felt was too boyband-esque, to Westside. They first supported the Backstreet Boys in Dublin, then went on tour with Boyzone through the UK and Ireland in November of 1998. The lads had stunned audiences, and won "Best New Tour Act" at the Smash Hits Awards in November 1998.

In early 1999 the band was required to change their name when they found out that a number of groups already shared the same name. Westlife was chosen since three of the lads are from the west side of Ireland and it's were their life has been.

In April 1999 Swear it Again was released and flew to the top of the Irish and British charts. It became the biggest selling single in Irish history. Their eagerly-awaited debut album was released in the UK in November 1999 and has since reached triple-platinum status. They won Record of the Year for Flying Without Wings in 1999 and My Love in the following year. These lads have been winning numerous awards left right and centre, it is clear that Westlife have achieved much acclaim and enjoyed a lot of success. Already in their brief career Westlife have broken records as fast as they have set them - their second album, Coast To Coast went triple platinum in Ireland after only one day of release, and their seventh single release, My Love, gave them a place in chart history as they became the only band in UK chart history to have their first seven singles debut at number one. Westlife made it into the 2001 Guiness Book of World Records after ever single one of their singles made it to the number one spot in the UK. I Have A Dream and Seasons in the Sun even became the UK Christams number 1. Their Christmas single, What Makes a Man, narrowly missed the number one spot, charting at number 2, however their charity release of Uptown Girl for Comic Relief put the band back at the top of the charts. Their subsequent singles Queen Of My Heart and World Of Our Own both made it to the number one spot, along with the album World Of Our Own. The group's first self-penned single, Bop Bop Baby, reached a creditable number five. The latest single release, Unbreakable, and the Greatest Hits album of the same title look set to continue Westlife's success, both heading for the top of the charts.
