2004-2005 Elections to be held
The information in this packet is very important for understanding the role you are thinking of taking this year in the Hofstra Jewish Community by running for an executive, general or chair position. The role of the board members is an important one. It sets the tone and policies for activities, social action and moral stances. All positions are limited only by your creativity and dedication.
In order to be eligible for the April elections, you must fulfill the requirements to be a candidate, complete this packet and turn it into the Hillel Office (SC 213) by April 14th 2004. You must hand it to Lori Hoch. Also, for elected positions, please arrange to meet with Lori Hoch from April 15th to the 20th.
For leadership board and chair positions, you must also return the packet by April 14th and at that time sign up for an interview.
Executive Board Positions:

Leadership Council Positions:
Social programming, Social Action, Kesher and Koach
Chair Positions:
Holocaust Remembrance, Women’s group, Men’s group, Sports, Israel Education and Jewish Greek council.
EXECUTIVE BOARD AND LEADERSHIP COUNCIL
GENERAL EXPECTATIONS
- To help fulfill Hillel’s mission statement: To maximize the number of Jews doing Jewish with other Jews
- Act as a role model for Hillel
- 1 hour of office hours a week
- Mandatory set-up and clean-up during events
- Mandatory to attend bi-weekly board meetings
- Run one committee meeting at least once a month
- Dedicate two hours a semester of time to fundraise for Hofstra Hillel
- Attend Hofstra Hillel Leadership Training / Retreat in September and at other times needed
- No use of illegal substances while performing various tasks for, or indirectly associated with, Hillel. No attendance at Jewish community events under the influence of alcohol or illegal substances
- Be respectful in words and deeds to the Jewish beliefs and observances of others which may differ from your own
EXECUTIVE BOARD RESPONSIBILITIES
President
- Ensure programs are being organized and run in each area (social, educational, Israel ..etc)
- Run general council meetings twice a month
- Write agenda for meetings
- Meet with chairs at least once every two weeks
- Collect and distribute information from Hillel mailbox in Student Activities
- Meet with Jewish Student Life Coordinator once a week
- Work with treasurer on preparing Student Government budget
- Must attend Student Government meeting, gatherings and programs for club presidents
- Coordinate Purim Gift basket program
- Must attend Leaders Assembly, August 19 – 24, 2004 in Honesdale, PA (Exceptions may be made for unusual circumstances)
Treasurer
- Work with Jewish Student Life Coordinator and council members on grants for events
- Collect money or assign someone to collect money at dinners / programs
- Attend SGA appropriation committee meetings
- Prepare annual Student Government Association budget with President
- Submit appropriate Student Government Association forms for program payment in a timely fashion
- Coordinate fundraising events
- Follow-up on payment for programs including cash and Dutch debits
LEADERSHIP COUNCIL RESPONSIBILITIES
Social Programming
- Work with Jewish Student Life Coordinator and JCSC on Opening Weekend
- Plan and implement one social program a month including the annual Channukah program and Spring Dance.
- Create publicity including but not limited to fliers, posters, occasional phone calls, newspaper advertisements
Social Action
- Implement social action programs once a month such as: visits to soup kitchens, on-going art projects for children, Geriatric Center and distribution of leftover food to the INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network)
- Create publicity including but not limited to fliers, posters, occasional phone calls, newspaper advertisements
- Work with Jewish Student Life Coordinator on grants for additional social action programming
- Assist Administrative Director with the Intergenerational lunch
- Run campus-wide Community Service Day / Week in the Spring and a major event in the fall, including but not limited, to the Thanks & Giving Project and PB&Jam
- Encourage student participation on the Spitzer Forum, as well as other social action conferences
- Work on at least one major fundraiser for UJA
- Coordinate student phone-a-thon for Super Sunday
Kesher
- Plan and implement Reform services every two weeks
- Arrange for a song leader (including transportation)
- Explore new and creative ways of planning Shabbat
- Plan and implement one educational Jewish program a month (can be together with Koach)
- Plan and implement appropriate Jewish holiday programs with the Koach chair
- Discuss Shabbat menus with Administrative Director
- Inform students of informal Jewish learning and Kesher conferences
- Create publicity including but not limited to fliers, posters, occasional phone calls, newspaper advertisements
Koach
- Plan and implement Conservative services every two weeks
- Explore new and creative ways of planning Shabbat
- Plan and implement one educational Jewish program a month (can be together with Kesher)
- Plan and implement appropriate Jewish holiday programs with the Kesher chair
- Discuss Shabbat menus with Administrative Director
- Inform students of informal Jewish learning and Koach conferences
- Create publicity including but not limited to fliers, posters, occasional phone calls, newspaper advertisements

- Work on Kristallnacht program with the Jewish Campus Service Corps Fellow
- Work on Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Memorial Day) program
- Promote Holocaust awareness
- Help promote and organize the Taub Holocaust Trip
- Create publicity including but not limited to fliers, posters, occasional phone calls, newspaper advertisements
Women’s Group
- Plan and implement one program per month for women about women’s issues and Judaism
- Create publicity including but not limited to fliers, posters, occasional phone calls, newspaper advertisements
Men’s Group
- Plan and implement one program per month for men about men’s issues and Judaism
- Create publicity including but not limited to fliers, posters, occasional phone calls, newspaper advertisements
Sports
- Encourage participation in intramurals and other sports activities
- Explore opportunities for outdoor adventure
- Create publicity including but not limited to fliers, posters, occasional phone calls, newspaper advertisements
Israel Education
- Plan and implement Yom Haatzmaut (Israel Independence Day) program
- Work with Jewish Student Life Coordinator to promote Birthright Israel
- Work on Israel awareness programs throughout the year
- Create publicity including but not limited to fliers, posters, occasional phone calls, newspaper advertisements
Jewish Greek Council
- Serve as a connection between Hillel and Hofstra Fraternities and Sororities
- Plan and implement two programs per semester
- Work with Jewish Service Campus Corps Fellow
- Create publicity including but not limited to fliers, posters, occasional phone calls, newspaper advertisements
