The Road To Somewhere
Chapter 2

November 2000

Elise was in her office getting ready to leave for the day. She grabbed her bag and walked out of the office, closing the door behind her. Elise walked down the hall, and stopped at the door to Chris' office. She knocked on the door.

"Yeah?" Chris asked. Elise opened his door.

"I was just going to say that I am going home for the night." Elise said. Chris nodded and stopped her just as she was about to walk out of the doorway.

"Would you like to go out tonight?" Chris asked, "The guys are having a little get together and I'm supposed to bring a date." Elise stood there. "I know its short notice and all, but it'll be fun. I promise."

"What time and where?" Elise asked.

"I could pick you up." He said, "Around six-thirty."

"Okay." Elise smiled. "See you then."

"Great." Chris smiled and watched as she left. An hour and a half later Chris stood outside of Elise's apartment door waiting for her to open it.

"Hey." Elise smiled pulling the door open. "Come on in. Let me just finish putting my jewelry on and we can go." Chris stepped inside the small apartment. She motioned towards the two people sitting on the couch, "This is my friend, Kacie and her husband Jon. They were just about to leave."

"Nice to meet you, I am Chris." Chris introduced himself. Jon stood up and shook his hand. Elise walked out of the room and down the short hall. Chris stood in the room, taking in the small space.

"So where are you going?" Jon asked curiously.

"Leave him alone Jon!" Elise yelled from her room. Chris grinned. "You'll have to excuse him, Chris. He has taken it upon himself to be overprotective." She said as she stepped came back into the room. Elise put her earrings in her ears. "I'm ready." Elise turned to her friends, "You guys lock up when you leave."

"Have fun." Kacie said as Elise and Chris were walking to the door. Elise turned around and smiled at her best friend. Elise closed the door behind them and headed down the front walkway out to Chris' car.

"So where are we going?" Elise asked once they were on the road.

"Justin's." Chris answered. "So those were your friends?"

Elise laughed and nodded. "Yeah Kacie and I were roommates in college and I've known Jon since high school." Chris nodded and concentrated on the road ahead of him.

"Good morning." Chris grinned walking into Elise's office the following morning. He sat down in the chair in front of her desk. Chris watched her concentrate on the sketch she was working on for the fall line.

"Hi." She said not looking up from the paper.

"I had fun last night." He said and picked up a pencil off of her desk. Chris twirled it between his fingers. When she didn't say anything, he sighed loudly. Elise looked up at him with an annoyed look on her face when he started taping the pencil on the desktop. "Did you have a good time?"

"Yes." Elise said. She smiled and then looked back down at the paper.

"So …" Chris paused, "I was wondering if you would like to go out again on Friday." Elise looked up at him.

"I don't think that's a very good idea, Chris." She said quietly. Chris' face fell. He nodded and then got up to leave the room. Chris set the pencil back down on the desk and walked out of the room. Elise sighed and went back to work on her project.

A few minutes later she heard someone walk past the office. Elise jumped when they threw a paper airplane and it landed on her desk. Elise picked it up and examined one of the wings, which read "read me." She opened it carefully and grinned seeing the printed message, "Please?!" The pouting face made her giggle.

Elise thought about it for a minute before getting up and walking down to Chris' office. She stopped in the doorway while he finished up on the phone. Chris smiled when he saw her.

"I'll go out with you on Friday." She answered quietly.

"Great." Chris grinned. "I can pick you up at eight and we can go eat and then see a movie if you'd like." Elise nodded.

"I better get back to work. Do you still want me to go to the photo shoot?" Elise asked.

"Yep." Chris nodded.

Friday night came very quickly for Elise, and before she knew it Chris and she were on their way to dinner. They were seated right away. After dinner the two went and saw a movie and later that evening Chris walked Elise up to her door.

"Well I had fun tonight." Chris smiled. Elise didn't say anything. "I hope we can do this again." She forced a smile out. "What's wrong?" He asked concerned.

"I don't think I can do this." She said sadly. After seeing the look on his face Elise quickly added, "It's not you. You're a great guy. I just don't know if …" She tried to avoid her other reason, but Chris knew something else was bugging her.

"There's something else." He reached out and touched her arm. They stood their quietly for a few minutes.

"This is really hard …" Elise started.

"You don't have to tell me."

"I want to though. I really do." Elise half smiled. She took in a deep breath and let it out slowly. "I had a really long relationship, which has been really hard for me. Even though it has been well over a year now."

"Why did ya'll break up?" Chris asked. Elise didn't say anything. "Sorry. I shouldn't have asked that."

"That's okay." Elise paused, "We didn't break up. Umm … he passed away a few months before we were supposed to be married."

"I'm sorry." Chris looked genuinely sorry. Elise wiped her cheek. "Are you all right?" Elise nodded.

"I'm fine. He just made a stupid mistake one night and things happened." She stated with a big sigh. Elise wiped her cheek again and turned to unlock her door. "I had a nice time tonight. Thanks for taking me out." Elise said when the door was opened.

"You are welcome." Chris said. "Maybe we can do it again sometime." He leaned over and kissed her cheek.

"I'd love too."

"Have a good weekend." Elise smiled and stepped inside the apartment. She closed the door behind her and Chris walked back to his car.

After dinner at Elise's one evening, Chris and she were sitting on the couch watching TV. Chris reached over and picked up the remote from the table. He changed the channel. Elise reached over and tried to take it back from him.

"We've been watching this lame movie forever." Chris rolled his eyes.

"I've been watching it. You've been staring at me all night." She laughed. Chris smiled which caused Elise to blush.

"You are just too cute." He said with a grin. Chris was quiet for a minute before he leaned over and kissed her. When he pulled away, he stated, "Couldn't help it."

"That's okay." Elise said quietly with a smile. She looked over at him slyly. Chris' right eyebrow raised and he smiled too. Chris waited for her to make the first move. Elise kissed him.

When she pulled away, a small smile graced her lips. Chris hand tugged on her shirt so that she would move. Elise ended up straddling his waist. His hands rested on her lower back. Elise wrapped her arms around his neck. She leaned in and kissed him again. Chris gripped the hem of her shirt as he increased the pressure. Their lips met each other again and again.

"Wow," Elise sighed after the last kiss. Chris grinned at her reaction. He moved his hand to look at his watch. "What time is it?" Elise asked as she rested her head on his shoulder.

"10:00." He answered and rested his hand on her thigh. "I should be going since we have to go into work tomorrow. Hey I have to go to the LA office on Wednesday, would you like to come with me?"

"Yeah. That would be fun." Elise nodded, "Just let me know what time so I can be ready." She hugged him before getting up.

"Thanks for dinner." Chris stated as he stood up, "I had a good time."

"Me too." She walked him to the door. Chris opened the door and turned around. He leaned down and kissed her again. "Drive safe." She smiled and leaned against the open door as he stepped onto the porch.

"I will." He smiled. "Good night."

"Night." Elise said. She watched him walk out to his car and get in before closing and locking the front door. Elise walked to her bedroom and got ready for bed. She was still reeling from their first kiss as she lay down for the night.

"How long have we been dating now?" Chris asked. He looked down at Elise who just rolled her eyes. Chris grinned, "Okay so I know … six months." He reached over and grabbed her hand with a squeeze. The two were walking down the street in the neighborhood that Elise's apartment complex was in. She leaned in closer to him as they continued to walk.

"You are amazing." Elise said with a sigh.

He stopped when they got closer to her apartment building. Chris kissed her and then they walked up to her door. Elise unlocked it and the two of them went inside. "What are we doing tonight?"

"What do you want to do?" Elise said with a yawn.

"If you are tired I can go." He offered.

"I'll be fine. We can watch a movie or something." She sat down on the couch and put her feet up on the coffee table. Chris walked into her kitchen and started searched through the cabinets. "Are you making something to eat?"

"If you want me to."

"I do." Elise smiled and closed her eyes. She listened to Chris moving around in the other room and eventually dozed off. Chris walked into the living area when the food was done cooking. He leaned over and planted a kiss on her lips. Elise stirred and sighed in her sleep.

"Lis." He said quietly, "Dinner is ready." Elise opened her eyes a few seconds later and smiled. She nodded and Chris helped her to stand up. "I just made macaroni and cheese."

"That's fine." She said as they walked to the table. After they ate their dinner quietly, Elise washed the dishes and wiped the counter down. "Thanks for cooking."

"You're welcome." Chris smiled, "I am going to go ahead and go now. So you can get some sleep."

"Okay." Elise said as they walked to the door. After giving her a hug and kiss, Chris reached behind him and opened the door.

"Lock your door," He paused, "And I love you."

"I love you too." Elise smiled. She looked up at him and the two kissed again.

"I'm going to go. Sleep well." He smiled. Elise watched as he walked down to his car. Chris waved as he got in, and she closed the door. Elise locked it behind her.
