One Man’s Battle of Good and Evil

"That's when you must fight harder than you've ever fought before / 'Cause what you got goin' on inside you is a war / Between good and evil"
DMX, "Angel"

My current philosophy on life centers around the age-old concept of good versus evil. I believe there are forces of evil at work in the world today. These forces are attempting to cause the destruction of mankind in subtle and no-so-subtle ways. For example, one immediate effect of these evil forces is the current threat of biological war, which would bring about the swift downfall of human civilization. On a more personal level, evil causes people to cheat, abuse drugs and alcohol, hate other people, commit adultery, and any number of other immoral acts, ranging in magnitude from indecent to atrocious.
My mission in life is to avoid the influence of evil. I don’t drink or use drugs, since from my point of view, they only lead to bad things. I try not to feel hatred for anything. The bottom line is that my goal is to live life in pursuit of things that are good, pure, and beautiful.
The downside of my philosophy is that I think it causes me to avoid situations that might turn out to be great because they could potentially be very negative. For example, I avoid parties because the mass intoxication and chance fornication that tend to occur run contrary to some of my most strongly-held values. However, I’m sure that by not attending such social gatherings I miss out on literally thousands of opportunities to meet new and interesting folks. Ultimately I feel that the trade off of upholding morality while missing out on entertainment is worth it.
