Through Thick And Through Thin

Chapter Sixteen

By the end of the day, Linz was practically tearing her hair out from missing Kevin so much. She knew that it had only been one day, and that he would most likely still be angry with her, but she didn't care. She had to see him again.

Linz slipped into one of the dresses that Kevin had gotten her in Milan. Her red hair tumbled around her shoulders in loose ringlets, the way that she knew Kevin liked it. She sighed and checked her reflection in the mirror. Her eyes were still slightly red and puffy from all of the crying, but that couldn't be helped. Linz drew in a shaky breath and grabbed her purse before going downstairs and getting into her car. Here goes everything, she thought as she started the engine.

"Thanks," Sara said as Kevin brought her a glass of ice water. They were sitting on his couch and had just gotten back from dinner.

"No problem," Kevin said with a forced smile. He wasn't sure about Sara. She was pretty--and smart, and funny, and all the rest--but he was afraid that his heart still belonged to someone else.

Sara took a sip of the water and set it down on the coffee table, licking her lips. "I had such a wonderful time at dinner tonight," she purred, scooting closer to him so that their legs were touching.

Kevin found himself staring down her shirt and quickly averted his eyes. "Yes, me too," he agreed dully.

"That was a lovely restaurant. How did you find it?" Sara asked, resting her hand on his knee.

"A f-friend told me about it," Kevin stammered as she slid her hand up his thigh.

"Who?" Sara wondered, starting to rub the muscles in his upper leg.

"I forget," Kevin said honestly as she climbed into his lap and straddled him.

"Oh," Sara said, untucking his shirt tail from his pants. She ran her hands up under his shirt and pressed her lips up against his.

Kevin found himself resting his hands on her hips and pulling her closer as the two of them kept kissing. He watched wide-eyed as she pulled her shirt up over her head, and he pulled her back for another kiss when she had tossed it over her shoulder. Kevin stood up, pulling her with him, and she wrapped her legs around his waist as he carried her towards the stairs.

Linz took a deep breath as she parked her silver Miata that Kevin had given her as a birthday present in front of his house. She checked her appearance in the mirror for the millionth time before hesitantly stepping out of the car and walking up the front path. She raised her fist and knocked on the door. There was no answer. She knocked again. Still no answer. Linz opened the door and was surprised when she realized that the lights were on. Kevin was practically neurotic about saving electricity. It was unlike him to leave the lights on like that if he wasn't home.

"Kevin?" Linz said unsurely as she walked into the living room. What if something had happened? What if Brett was back? What if...no, stop it! Linz shook her head quickly. Brett was tucked safely away in prison for attempted murder. There was no way.

Linz started to climb the stairs, not noticing the scrap of red cloth on the floor that had been Sara's tube top. As she heard Kevin's dark bedroom, she could hear soft moans. Shit, is he in trouble? she thought.

"Oh, G-d!" she heard him mumble. Those didn't really sound like moans of pain. Linz's eyes narrowed in suspicion as she walked down the hall and the moans got progressively louder. No, those were definitely not sounds of suffering. Linz took a deep breath and threw the door open, turning on all the lights as she did.

She immediately gasped and stepped back. Kevin was lying on his back on the bed while some girl was sucking him. After a minute, he and the girl realized what had happened and looked up at her. Kevin's eyes widened. "Linz," he murmured.

Linz shook her head and stepped backwards slowly, breaking into a run as she hurried away from him.

"Shit!" Kevin exclaimed.

Sara figured out what was going on. "Forget about her," she coaxed, getting back on top of him.

"No...shit!" Kevin said again, pushing her away and yanking his boxers on before hurrying down the stairs after his ex-girlfriend. He didn't catch up with her until she was almost to the car. "Linz!" he said, grabbing her hand.

"You hypocrite!" Linz returned, shaking herself free. "Dumping me for sleeping with another man and then fucking another girl next chance you get!" She got into the car and slammed the door.

"Linsey...baby..." Kevin pleaded.

"Don't you 'Linsey baby' me! I'm getting the hell out of here!" she yelled.

"Please, Linz, I love you," Kevin begged. "I'm so sorry, sweetie, she--"

"Meant nothing to you, yeah, yeah, yeah!" Linz interrupted, starting the engine of the car. "Why don't you try practicing what you preach for once, Kevin?"

"Linsey, don't drive away, please," Kevin begged.

"Go fuck yourself!" Linz shouted over her shoulder as she pressed down on the gas pedal and sped away, leaving Kevin to sink down to the curb and cry.
