Chapter Eleven

"Linz!" Kevin called after his girlfriend's retreating figure. "Linsey!"

She finally turned around. "Oh, there you are. I was looking for you."

Kevin tucked some stray hair behind her ear. "You look beautiful tonight, honey," he murmured.

"Thank you," she said uneasily. "But hey, it's your dress."

Kevin laughed. "That didn't sound right."

She cracked a smile. "No, it didn't."

"So didn't you have something to tell me?" Kevin asked.

"Uh...yeah. But I don't think that this is the place to do it," Linz pointed out.

"Then let's go somewhere else," he suggested, offering her his arm.

She took it, and as they walked, Kevin couldn't help but notice how tightly she was holding onto him. The two of them went out the back door again and stopped close to the spot where A.J. and Katie had been standing just minutes before.

"So what is it?" Kevin asked softly.

Linz took a deep breath. "Before you hear this, know that I really do love you, and the fact that you're with me really does mean so much to me," she said almost in a whisper, touching his cheek.

He turned his head so that he could kiss her fingertips softly. "I know, baby."

Linz quickly pulled her hand back. "I...well, the thing is, I, uhm..."

"You're pregnant, are you?" Kevin finished for her.

"What? No, I'm not pregnant!" Linz replied. "I wish. I mean, I don't wish that REALLY, just instead of--"

"Linsey," Kevin said softly, looking into her eyes. "What is it?"

She gulped and blurted out her secret before she could stop herself. "I slept with another man."

Kevin released her and stared blankly ahead in shock as Linz burst into tears.

"Honey, I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to, it just happened, I swear! It was--"

"How could you?" Kevin interrupted, his voice etched with pain. "Why did you?"

"I missed you," Linz whispered. "I missed you so much, and I needed someone to be with me. I'm so sorry..." she repeated.

Kevin's eyes were welling up fast with the tears. "Linsey, I missed you, too, but I didn't sleep with someone else," he pointed out in a whisper.

"I know! I don't deserve you, Kevin, I..." She took a shaky breath. "Do you think you can ever forgive me?"

"I don't know," he said quietly. He looked at her one last time before he turned and walked away, leaving Linz to fall to the cold, hard ground in painful sobs.
