Love Will Find A Way

Chapter Thirty-Two

Kayla was lying on the couch of her bus the next morning with her eyes shut and headphones on when she heard someone walking towards her. Pressing pause on her Discman, she opened her eyes and sat up. She grinned and waved when she saw Kevin approaching her.

"Hey," she said, pulling her headphones down off her ears and letting them hang loosely around her neck.

"Damn it, you heard me! I wanted to scare you," Kevin complained.

She laughed. "Yeah, I had the volume down low."

"Figures," he muttered, smiling and shaking his head. "What were you listening to?"

"Phantom of the Opera," Kayla said dramatically.

"Very cool. Have you seen it?"

She nodded. "When it came to Boston."

"It's a great show."

"I know. Christine is kind of my dream role," Kayla explained. "I know all of her songs by heart and everything."

Kevin smiled. "Yeah, personally, I've always wanted to play the Phantom...but unfortunately, I can't hit most of the notes without sounding like a little girl."

Kayla giggled. "I'm gonna have to hear this sometime," she decided.

"Why? Blackmail?"

"Yeah, your singing is really that bad, Kev," Kayla agreed sarcastically. She laughed and shielded her face with her arm as he tossed a pillow at her. "Anyway, what's up? What are you doing on my bus?" Kayla asked authoritatively.

"Your bus?" Kevin echoed. "Honey, if it weren't for me, you wouldn't even have a bus."

She giggled. "No, seriously, what's up?"

He smiled. "Seriously. Okay, well...I wanted to ask you if you got an invite today."

"To what?"

"The AMA's."

"The who?" Kayla asked in confusion.

"AMA's," Kevin repeated. "American Music Awards?"

"Oh!" Kayla said in realization, smacking her forehead with the palm of her hand. "Hello, Kayla! Blonde moment! Yes, I did get one," she informed Kevin. An excited but nervous smile spread across her lips. "My first awards show," she added, rubbing her hands together.

Kevin nodded. "I know. That's why I have to ask you something."

"Shoot."

"Okay, well, as you know, Kristin's in L.A. right now shooting her movie," Kevin began.

"Oh, yeah, how's that going?" Kayla wondered.

"It's great," Kevin said with a grin. "But the point is she's busy there and the AMA's are in New York, so I'm not gonna be able to take her like I usually do, meaning that I need to either go alone or find someone else to go with me. And so I was wondering if you wanted to," he concluded.

Kayla's mouth dropped open for a moment before she quickly regained control of herself and shook her head. "Whoa, wait. You're asking me to go with you?" she asked in disbelief.

He laughed. "Yeah. I mean, I know we'll have fun, because, hell, you and I always do, and plus, it's you're first awards show, so I can introduce you to whoever you want to meet."

Kayla raised an eyebrow. "'N Sync?" she asked with amusement.

Kevin gulped. "Okay, almost everyone," he corrected, making her laugh. "So is that a yes?"

"What the hell do you think, Kevin?" Kayla asked him sarcastically. "Aah! I'm going on a date with Kevin Richardson!"

He grinned. "Hey...let's not get too carried away here, okay? I am a married man."

A look of false horror crossed Kayla's face. "Are you saying that we won't be having sex in the back seat of your car afterwards?"

Kevin's eyes widened, and he put a finger to his lips. "I didn't say that," he hissed through clenched teeth.

Kayla laughed. "Just making sure."

At that moment, Kevin's bodyguard yelled, "Kev!" from outside.

"Oops. I've gotta go," he said, scrambling to his feet. "We can talk later about the details, okay? It's in, like, two weeks I think."

"Okay, sounds good. Bye, Kev!" Kayla called after him, waving.

"Bye!" he yelled back as he hurried outside.
