Can't Say Why I Love You

Chapter Twenty

"Thanks for everything, Kevy," Katie said, kissing Kevin's cheek as he parked the car in front of her house.

"You're welcome, sweets. I'll call you after I pick up Linz."

"You don't have to."

"I know, but I will anyways. You know me."

Katie sighed. "Okay. Bye. Love you."

"Love you too."

Katie got out of the car and walked down the front path to the house. She paused at the front door when she realized that there was a chance that A.J. was still there waiting for her. She looked back and saw that Kevin was still there, waiting to see her inside. She took a deep breath, unlocked the front door, and went inside. "Hello?" she called out hesitantly. "Anyone home?" No answer. Katie sighed with relief and trudged slowly up the stairs to her room. She groaned. She didn't remember the staircase ever being that long and steep. When she finally reached the top, she went down the hall to the second door on the right, as she always did. She paused for a moment before opening it, seeing a note. Katie checked the signature. Alex McLean. She tore it off of the door and took it with her into her room. After she had collapsed onto the bed for a second, she finally worked up the courage to read it.

Katie:
I waited for you for three hours, but you never came, and when I tried to call you, your cell was turned off. Is everything all right? I'm getting worried, baby. Please give me a call as soon as you read this, okay? ILY sooo much.
          -Alex McLean-

Katie crumpled up the note and tossed it over her shoulder. She could hardly believe that all of the things that A.J. had said about her were lies. But she knew that Kevin was right. He had been right about Brett, and now he was right about A.J. Katie stood up and went to her closet to change into something a bit more comfortable than her skin- tight black dress. Her eyes immediately fell upon an old tour t-shirt with A.J.'s picture on it. She quickly pushed that aside and found a different shirt from one of the plays that she and Kevin had been in when they were kids, right before their father had died. Katie pulled that and some pajama pants on and tied her hair up before she climbed into bed. Despite what Kevin had thought, she hadn't slept much last night, and when she had dozed off, she'd been having dreams about A.J. Katie sighed and closed her eyes, unaware that at that moment, A.J. himself was doing the exact same thing.
