ANOTHER EARTHQUAKE, Aaron Carter (Jive)

Teen pop star Aaron Carter attempts to maintain his tenuous grasp on the affections of adolescent and prepubescent girls, a fickle demographic to say the least, with "Another Earthquake."

He has to do this without freaking out their parents, of course, and if he's lucky he'll resonate with enough adults to generate the kind of hits that might give his career comparative longevity. That's a lot of pressure for a 14-year-old, but kids his age can reach a broader group - just ask Hanson.

Kids his age can also become passi in a flash - again, just ask Hanson.

The young singer's previous releases, "Aaron's Party (Come Get It)" and "Oh Aaron!", both cracked the Top 10 on Billboard's album charts, and "Another Earthquake" is a perfectly reasonable follow-up.

The tide has turned against flashy pop, so Aaron Carter is branching out, offering a little more rock with the alternately catchy and stilted "America A O" and the spirited "My First Ride." The arrangements also have occasional organic flourishes, but the production is still heavier than it ought to be, especially the vocal processing.

Meanwhile, the singer is working through growing pains: He shows maturity with the love song "When It Comes to You" and the celebratory "Summertime," but adults will have to turn the other way when he dishes out the innocent treacle of "Without You (There'd Be No Me)" and "Do You Remember."

"Another Earthquake" ends with a preview of the upcoming solo debut from Aaron's label mate and older brother, Backstreet Boy Nick Carter. Why not? If there's still interest in Aaron, there's probably still interest in Nick.

Rating: 3/5
